THE WARRAGUL WESLEYAN TEA MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 18 December 1879

THE WARRAGUL WESLEYAN TEA MEETING. The Anniversary Services in connec tion with the Warragul Wesleyan Church were held on Sunday last, when the Rev. R. C. Flockart, of Sale preached to large congregations both morning and evening. On Monday evening there was a tea. meeting, fol lowed by a public meeting in Trinca's hfall, at which the attendances were very good. The tea meeting passed off very pleasantly, a most enjoyable repast being provided. The weather was all that could be desired, and, con sequently, many of the visitors came fronm long distances. The thanks of the Wesleyan body are due to Mes dames Copeland, Witton, Garside, Mouritz, a ul Lau, who gave tables, which w, re really quite a treat to be hold blforo the work of demolition commuenced. The cravings of hunger having been appeased, and the frag mnents removed, th, public meeting conmmenced, and before a s'a-t was made the hall was packed to cvjrflow ing, and many had to remain outside. There must have been abi.u, 0) pe...

OUR MELBOURNE LETTER. WEDNESDAY, 17th, DEC. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 18 December 1879

OUR M3ELBOURNE LETTER. (mROs OUR OW NCORRnEPONDENT.) WEDNESDAY, 17th, DEC. The political embroglio has set all the bona-fide as well as pseudo reformers of the constitution of the Legislature on the qui vive. The Liberal party in and out of the Assembly are full of hopes that Mr. Berry will not be weak enough to give way to the pertinacious and cunning attacks of the Opposition, while on the other hand the Munro clique trust that by splitting the ministerial ranks they may succeed in send ing the House to the country on a divided issue. It would be well for every true Liberal voter to remember that the squat ters' leases fall in next year, and that the Opposition and the Council (squatters' frieids) will at this juncture do everything they can to break up the party that will deal with Messrs. the Squattocracy when the questionof the renewal of the leases comes on, in a manner that will at length compel them to pay their fair share of the burden of taxation. From the movement now goi...

CORRESPONDENCE. THE FIREWOOD TRADE. (TO THE EDITOR.) [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 18 December 1879

CORRESPONDENCE. THE FIREWOOD TRADE. (TO THE EDITOR.) Sta.-Through your columns I would beg to suggest to those who are interestedin the firewood business the desirability of organ ising a movement for the purpose of peti tioning the Minister of Railways for a reduction of the rate on firewood. The present rate, as we all know, is all but pro hibitive. If the Minister will consent to adolt the Bunyip rate to all stitions, say to" 75 miles, it will be the means of opening up a vast trade with the metropolis in firewood and such like. I understand that a con cession of this kind has already been made on the Ballarat line. Yours &c., CHAS. SARGEANT.

BULN BULN SHIRE COUNCIL. FRIDAY, 12TH DECEMBER. ADJOURNED ORDINARY MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 18 December 1879

BULN BIULN SIRE COUNCIL. FRIDAY, 12Th? DECEMBER. ADJOURNED ORDINIYIT %KEETING. Present-The President (1T. Edney, Esq., J.P'.,) and Crs. Sullinua Smnith, Sargeant, Murphy, Barr, Connor, George and Walton. Minutes of ordinary meeting of the council held on the 22nd November were read. Before the minutes were adopted, a discussion arose as to whether the meeting was legal, inasmuch as it was resolved at a previous meeting that the council should meet on the Friday im mediately preceding full moon. But on referring to the books it was found that no such resolution had been re solved upon. Cr. Barr persisted that the meeting was illegal, as he was cor fident that he had tabled·a motion to the effect as previously stated, and also that the motion had been carried, and if it had not been entered in the shire minute book the secretary must have neglected to do so. Other councillors were also of opinion that the nmotion had been agreed to. Cr. George drew the attention of the council to the ...

OUR MELBOURNE LETTER. MONDAY, 23rd, DEC. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 23 December 1879

OUtR MiELBOURNE LETTER. (FROMI OUR OWVN CORRESPONDENT.) 3MONDAY, 23rd, Drc. It is generally expected that the proro gation of the Assembly will be announced on or about the 1st February, and that the dissolution will take place the next day. The general election will come off in about a fortnight or three weeks after the dis solution, and the new Parliament will pro bably be summoned for the despatch of business early in March. Free-trade New South Wales has had to admit a deficit in its, public revenue of nearly £000,000 for the present year. Pro tectionist Victoria under the " iniquitous management of a proletariat Government" (vide " Argus" and " Telegraph") has so far succeeded in maling both ends meet, and has not landed us in the general bank ruptcy that was so cheerfully prognosticated by the Opposition. News is again to hand of the Kellys. The latest rumor or canard is that they have risited'a station near Yarrawonga and pur chased a flock of sheep for which they paid in Eur...

CRICKET. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 23 December 1879

CRICKET. The match between the Waterloo and Brandy Creek knights of the wil low, which took place on Saturday, resulted in a victory for Waterloo by 8 runs. The match was decided by the first innings, the time being too short to allow of the Brandy Creek representatives getting a second in uings. Mr. Baker, the Waterloo captain, won the toss, and sent his men to the wickets first, the lot being disposed of for the moderate total of 45 runs, ten of which were contributed by F. Baker. The Brandy Creekites then faced the bowling, but only suc ceeded in putting together 37 runs, the captain, Gabbett, being the only one to reach double figures with a score of 10. In their second innings the Waterloo team scored 51, F. Baker being at the head of the poll with 20. The best bowling form was shown by Robinson for Waterloo, who secured seven wickets out of ten. Lacy and Gabbett trundled well for Brandy Creek. Appended are the scores: WATERLO, 1ST INNINGS. Robinson, b Lacy ... ... 4 Scott, b La...

OUR OWN POET'S CORNER. MY CHRISTMAS GIFT. DEDICATED TO MY DEAR YOUNG FRIEND BARBARA. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 23 December 1879

OUR OWN POET'S CORNER. ILY CHRISTMAS GIFT. DEDICATED TO MY DEAR TORG FRIEND - BARBARA. It was ChlristnLs eve ; And the myriad radiating stars of an Austral sky Looked down upon the world, With beneficent and smiling augury, Whilst scintillating with effulgentlight, In the mystic crown of night. Alone I stood Beneath the starlit dome; And I heard as 'twere a moan, Responsive to my gloomy thoughts, . In the weird-!ike, mournful:tone, Of the sad night wind, As in fitful breaths it floated by, Beneath the unnumbered twinkling orbs of light, That shone above me with phosphoric bhaze, In the limitless immeasiirable space, So bright with their oatherial splendour, On that Christmas Eve, That by me can never be forgotten. In my solitude I thought upon the night When, nineteen centuries ago, An infant-Christ--lay sleeping in a manger low; And also did I think upon a still more glorious, wond'rous star, Than any that was then, or since has ever been in view; A star that was God's harbinger of...
