STONE CUTTING EXTRAORDINARY New and Improved Band Saw. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 1 December 1913

STONE CUTTING EXTRAORDINARY New and Improved Band Saw. The increasing use of stone in the world's build ing operations, coupled with the increasing cost of labor, has turned the attention of engineers to devis ing stone-cutting machinery. Frame saws greatly assisted toward the solution of the problem, but an even more satisfactory condition of things has been brought about by the introduction of a diamond band saw, which is a remarkable instrument in its Avay. Messrs. G. W. Anderson ?& Co., Ltd., of the Tay mouth Engineering Works, England, had been ex perimenting for some time on a band saw method of cutting stone. The chief difficulty has been to keep the saw on the surface of the stone. How ever, the firm eventually struck signal success with what is now known as a diamond band saw. The complete machine consists of two steel pul leys carried on four columns, so arranged as to move simultaneously in a vertical direction at different speeds suited to the cutting. These pull...

DEFECTIVE AUSTRALIAN PATENTS LAW. Inventors' Institute Formed in Sydney. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 1 December 1913

DEFECTIVE AUSTRALIAN PATENTS LAW. ' Inventors' Institute Formed in Sydney. The newly-formed institute of Inventors, has kn its primary object, the protection of the public by blocking valueless patents being put on the market. It. hopes to 'discover'' inventors and. in the event of their inventions being good, assisting them to the most advantageous footing. It will also aim at the unification of the patents conditions through out the Km pi re. It hopes to also put the law on a level with that of America and Germany. Before a patent is given in either of these .countries, a thorough search is made through records, to see that a similar article, differing only iii detail, has not already been patented. In Australia, this is done by agents at a charge to the patentee, and very frequently it is discovered that a patent already exists. If new inventions are good, legal technicalities \shoulcl be simplified as much as possible. Expense should also be spared to the originators. Inventors,...

REGISTRATION AND GENTLENESS. Why the Institute of Architects has Failed. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 1 December 1913

REGISTRATION AND GENTLENESS. Why the Institute of Architects has Failed. An annual report of the New South Wales Insti tute of Architects would not be complete without reference to the vexed question of registration. And every j'ear the reference is the same — a confession of failure to impel allegedly convinced and favor ably disposed authorities to some practical degree of action. Yet a surprising optimism in the eventual triumphant passage of the bill through both Houses is preserved. The Institute is to be sympathised with in this matter. -To all intents and purposes it has done its j best by force of persistency if not strength of argu ment. If it has at all failed it has been in putting . an innoxious trust in the promises of politicians, and : being satislied to accept them as gospel. The result ' is that Governments have fallen wise to the infinite. \ faith of the Institute, and played on its gentleness. ; If it had not been satislied, or less convinced, with j the glib poli...

Industrial Arbitration in New South Wales REPORT OF THE ROYAL COMMISSION. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 8 December 1913

Industrial Arbitration in New South Wales REPORT OF THE ROYAL COMMISSION. The 'Legal Element' Criticised by 'A Sydney Builder.' The report of Royal Commissioner A. B. Piddington on the working of Indus trial Arbitration in N.S.W., though very able in many respects, does not seem to give us any practical solution of the problem. It does not supply the definite remedy for many of the troubles which seem to follow and at times accumulate on the efforts of those, who desire the industrial millennium. . The whole question is still in a very experimental stage, possibly too much so, and a more conservative start, making full use of the now latent ability of em ployers and employees to settle most of their difficulties, would have been much safer lines for the Commissioner to have folloAved. The politicians, influenced greatly as they are by legal minds and forms, thought they could bring about a state of industrial harmony by means of law; but their efforts have been about as futile as tr...

CANBERRA'S BUILDINGS. Bias and Misapprehension. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 8 December 1913

CANBERRA'S BUILDINGS. Bias and Misapprehension. Although the Federal Government has given na- ; tional satisfaction by appointing Walter Burley Griffin director of design, and declaring a definite policy, a biased and chagrined minority is still per sisting in its sinister attitude. All that can possibly , result from this regrettable persistence's the satis- ] faction of petty spitcfulness in obstructing the city's ] building progress. Nothing can now be done to divert the Federal Government -from its set pur pose. The bitterest critics of the Cook Ministry will scarcely credit the likelihood of it turning dog on the Australian people. Yet a .chagrined coterie vainly hopes against hope.,.; So the campaign of ob struction and misrepresentation's relentlessly con vVtinued. Since we cannot evidently appeal to the i-obstructors' sense of justice, let us finally appeal to their sense of shame. For as nothing else but shame can the persistent tactics be described. ? . , In the Melbourne ...

Architects, Builders and Engineers [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 8 December 1913

Architects, Builders and Engineers In this we have a splendid characterisation of the Hon. W. H. Kelly, Assistant Minister for Home Affairs. With his party in opposi tion he did admirable service as 'whip,' and since its elevation to office he has, on notable occasions, scourged the offending backs of : opponents. W. H. Kelly is a clear, quick thinker, a good tactician, and essen tially a fighter. As one who has materially assisted in the ' salvation of Canberra from misrule and maladministra tion, he has already achieved a national service that will be long remembered. He is one of the 'white hopes' of Australian politics.
