Meat Industry Legislation. Mr. Fred. We are behind the times here. Legisla tion will probably be introduced this session to place our meat business on a better footing than it is to-day, especially as regards the treatment of by-products and the export trade. There is a splendid system in opera tion in South Australia in this re gard, and there is really no waste at all. The Parliamentary Salary. [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 26 July 1912

The Parliamentary Salary. The motion submitted to the Farmers' and Settlers' Conference at the end ot : \ last week, urging an amendment of the Electoral Act so as to make it illegal to ask .subscriptions from a member of Parliament, is 011 the hues ot a reform for which we have repeatedly contended. The amendment of the Act, however, should go much further. It should be au offence for a member lo give anything away to anybody, directly or indirectly. The present system enables all sorts of demands to be made upon members, aud most of these requests are a kind of blackmail, inasmuch as failure to comply with them adversely affects the member's 1 popularity, and therefore his chance of securing re-election. But they are also highly undesirable because of Ylie chance they give a wealthy man of bribing his constituency by a flood of generosity, however discreetly that corruption may be disguised as plnlaulhropy or otherwise. The member ought to be able to count on his salary as his own...
