The greatest pains are taken to train tho animal, and its usefulness was quite established at lust years manoeuvers near Goblentz. It ia omploj'c.d in three ways. Its intelligence and keen scent aie utilised for discovering wounded men. Tho St. Bernard would naturally be chosen for siuuai'itan duties of this kind, but but tho object is to choose smaller dogs, which are less likely to be shot. During tho manoeuvres 200 soldiers were ordered to full wounded in different parts of the forest. Five hundred ambulance orderlies were instructed to find them. Twelve es caped their search, but these were all scented out by four dogs, which on a repetition of tho experiment, saved eighteen who would have otherwise have had no help.
