HEIDELBERG POLICE COURT. MONDAY, AUGUST 14. - (Before Mesrs. M. Macleod (Chair man), Cr. Stone and W. H. Collins, J's.P. J's.P. Welcome. On behalf of the Bench, Mr. Mac leod welcomed Mr. Collins as an ad ditional J.P. The inspector of police and Mr. Ridgeway (solicitor) also added words of welcome. Mir. Col lins suitably replied. Vaccination. Constable Harrison proceeded against Waiter Hlancock, Frank Michael and Frank Carr for failing to have their children vaccinated, and each' was fined £2. A Licensing Case. Inspector of Police v. Jas. H. Gueron, charged with being on licensed premises and cairrying liquor away from the Grand View Hotel, Fairfield, on July 35, during pro hibited hours. Defendant, who was defended by Mr. Ridgeway, pleaded not guilty. Constable Williamson, of Colling wood, stated that on July 15 he and Constable Burrows, of Ascot Vale, were outside the hotel at 11.20, and saw the defendant come out, with three others, carrying a bag with a bottle of beer. Wlhen-a district is endowed by na ture in the'wayof fresh air,hills and valleys, streams and scenery, it is then left to.the hand of man to make or mar it. He ustially mars it. No one disputes the scenic effect or the health-giving propensities of the shire of Heidelberg, and yet in its midst are three hospitals of various kinds. It is intended to double the size of one so as to admit more fever pa tients, and the Government has a proposal to- place a consumptive sanatorium at Mont Park. What is is store for the future it is hard to imagine, but if .the residents of this district do the right thing they will settle the future' of hospitals as far as this shire is concerned. An indig nation meeting was held at Ivanhoe last week to protest against the ac tion of the Government, and they are following up that protest by means of a monster petition and deputation to the Premier.. It is some years siuce so mulch inter. est was taken in municipal matters in feidlelberg, but the result shows that the ratepayers are satisfied with the work done by Cr. Rank in the past, w'ho has served them for 12 years. When the result was declared, Cr. Rank briefly thanked the ratepayers for placing him at the top of the poll, and: was glad to know that they recogri.edtl in a fitting way his efforts to cserve thein. Mr Terry thanked those who supported him in his endeavor to alter the state of affairs in the riding. FAIRFIELD RIFLE CLUB. Last Saturday, at Williamstown, the club celebrated their annual shoot. The wind at times was very gutsty and cold. The conditions were five shots on each range-200, 300 and 500 yards. Several new members were present, and were pleased with their own performances, The only possible was scored by Russ Blowdler at 500 yards, but G. Anderson scored highest off the rifle for the three ranges (68). The best with handicaps were I-H. Reidle 74, and W. Williamson 73; For the second grade E. Thorn 71, ahd R. Ford 68. The highest of the new members was A. HIarwood 55. Alto gother there weroe 30 members present.

Six O'clock Closing League. A meeting was called to discuss the formation of a "Six o'Clock Closing League." The delegates as sembled in the Rechabite Hall, Hei delberg, on Monday evening, - 7th inst. The following were present: Rev. E. C. Frewin, Mr. D. Tyrer, Mr. F. W. Chambers, Church of England, Heidelberg; Rev. A. Hardie, Mr. Chas. Fraser, Mr. H. H. Hocking, Presbyterian Church, Heidelberg; Rev. H. Robinson, Methodist Church, Heidelberg; Mr. J. W. Tingate, Mr. L. G. Rouch, Mr. J. C. Burton, Inde pendent Order of Rechabites, Heidel berg; Mr. Jos. Smith, Mr. W. J. Ross, Mr. Carl Aumann, Presbyterian Church, Templestowe; Mr. A. Chivers, Mr. A. Ross, Mr. P. Ras mussen, Independent Order of Rechabites, Templestowe. Delegates were also expected from Greens borough, Eltham and Diamond Creek. Rev. A. Hardie was voted to the chair.
