Some More Mud For Melba [Newspaper Article] — The Sunday Herald — 23 January 1949

Some More Mud For Melba By IAN BEVAN BEVERLEY has been at the typewriter again. That naughty young man isn't so young as he was but he seems deter mined to be just as naughty and -heaven help us-after all these years he's still simply furious with Australia. It is, as the publisher's blurb discreetly reminds us, "more than 20 years since the publication of Mr. Beverley Nichols's Twenty Five." At the beginning of this year, which will see his fiftieth birth- day, he publishes a second auto- biographical volume called "All I Could Never Be." As it turns out the book says very little about what Mr. Nichols could never be (although that would be quite a subject), but it says ,a lot about what he has been, seen and done, and about people he has learned to call by their first names. Anyone familiar with Nichols's formula will know what to expect. There is-of whimsy a solid dose, of sentiment some unexpec- tedly good flashes, of reporting plenty of snob anecdotes and yet another dollop of ...

UNLUCKY RUN BY HELIOFLY [Newspaper Article] — The Sunday Herald — 23 January 1949

UNLUCKY RUN BY HELIOFLY MELBOURNE, Sat. - Comedy Prince broke the course record to win the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley to-day, but Heliofly's jockey, J. Purtell, said his mount would have "won easily," had he not been gal- loped on when in front. Comedy Prince ran the six furlongs less 20 yards in Jm 11s, which broke the previous record by half a second. Heliofly had just raced to the front when he was galloped on by his nearest opponent. He suffered a severely cut heel-break. Purtell said after the race: "Heliofly stopped to a walk in a stride. "He was on the bit at the time, and 1 expected him to race away to a five or six lengths lead." When the coif returned to his stall his heel was bleeding pro- fusely. Heliofly was previously trained at Randwick by M. McCarten. The colt is an outstanding Oakleigh Plate prospect if his in- jury does not hold up his pre- paration. Comedy Prince at his qnly Sydney run made one act of The Shorts at the A.J.C. spring car- nival. Comedy" P...

SURF RACE SHOCK [Newspaper Article] — The Sunday Herald — 23 January 1949

The Manly crew led through- out to win the final. North Cronulla surf star Bobby Johnson had an easy win in the senior surf race. Tinselled Beauties Hailed U.S. President From Our Washington Office [Newspaper Article] — The Sunday Herald — 23 January 1949

Tinselled Beauties Hailed U.S. President From Our Washington Office TJARRY S. TRUMAN'SJn xl auguration as President of the United States for the term J949-5'2 was not a very elegant affair. There were too many bray- ing Missouri mules in the hours long parade, and too many tinselled floats with beauty contest winners on them. Even the diplomatic corps, some of whom attended com- plete with sashes and swords at side, were mistaken by one celebrant to be something olse. He asked: "You're from the Missouri Lodge of Shriners, ain't you?" (Shriners are a fraternal order imth ivonderlul ceremonial cos- tumes.) The inaugural 'ceremony had no "carefully calculated effect." h was as typically American as Truman himself. It was a Middle Western' Jamboree, and no one would have been surprised if part of the parade routine had included a cyclorama of Buffalo Bill\ cliasing Indians, or a troupe of cowboys roping and throwing steers. Even Truman's carefully pre- pared address dealing with the sol...
