THOSE RATES. To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Dungog Chronicle : Durham and Gloucester Advertiser — 16 January 1894

THOSE RATES. To the Editor. ? ? Sir, — In your last issue a 'Rate- payer' asks the pertinent question whether the Municipal Council are prepared to do their duty in making certain persons pay their rates now due. Is it not a notorious fact that the rate for 1893 was illegally levied, ^ ^inasmuch as the councillors did not do their duty in complying with a certain section of the Act. I do not think the aldermen are so blameworthy in the mutter, as are those who wish to taKe advantage or rne error, as it la |i well known that they were green in | ? municipal affairs, arid the mistake j made was accidental. 'This will not, of course, excuse them in the eyes of ? . the law, nor in the eyes of some of the ratepayers, because tbe gentlemen ?' _ who consented lo : act as aldermen should have made themselves acquain ?« ted with at least tbe ABC of their duties. The question arises, Mr Editor, aro the aldermen to be held personally re 'l^onaible for the loss of revenue that will probably res...

Local and General. VrsiTOK. — Last woek Mr L. 0. La gerlow, late Mayor of Taree, visited Dungog for the first time. . He was very much impressed with the town, and its picturesque surroundings. When in Taree ho was the ? moving spirit in the North Coast Railway League, and he says tho more he Boes of the country the more he is convin ced that a north-coast railwoy would pay, and although Mr Lagerlow is re siding in Sydney, he still takeB a deep interest in the progress of the north ern river districts. Death. — On Saturday last Mr T. Connolly, of Bendolba, lost a son aged 1 year and 9 months, from measles. Ahout Again'. — We are glad to see Mr P. W. Jennings, who was seriously ill last week, about again. He iB fast recovering. A Eiliat, Sacrifice. — A young man, named Bedzar, at Wellington on Wednesday was seized with symptoms of poisoning, at first supposed to nave been taken accidently. A letter has beoi since found, however, writton by young Bedzar in anticipation of his death, i...

LAND SETTLEMENT. To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Dungog Chronicle : Durham and Gloucester Advertiser — 16 January 1894

LAND SETTLEMENT. To the Editor. , Sir,— One of tho greatest difficulties ?.???in connection with the lnnd question,' ' , - ''ifepnsisl s in the fact that as a rule those ?' ?who talk the most about it g-*ndrftlly , know.the least. Mariy seem to liavo an idea that if the whole of tho unetn ployed were dumped. on the land, tho difficulty ' in connection ' with them ? -l.i aV ? : ? i._ ? ..ivuuiu ceutiu. ;? jjuu liiuiu i.aii uu nu greator mistake than this. A nlau ?must have* sorno practical knowlotlgo of tillagi', if the soil is to beeomo his means of.livelihood, and he must have soino means ot- subsistence until tho soil has become productive. 'Without these conditions, the unemployed might as well be' placed in the the centre of an arid desert. Conse quently, legislation based on such mistaken lines, will always pjovo a fail ure. AVhat is required is to make the land readily accessible to those capable of cultivating it, or turning it to useful account: Wo cannot have too many stl,c...

Latest News. [By Tolegraph.] SYDNEY, Monday. EXECUTION OP MRSi KNORR. SHE DIES REPENTENT. Mrs. Knorr was executed at .the MelbMrne Gaol this mcriiing, aud walked firmly to the scaffold. No hitch occurred. She made a speech from the scaffold referring to the crime. Three hangmen officiated at the execution, which was a' fearful spec tacle, and she met lier fate particularly calm. The fortitude was not expected. Her going to meet death m the manner described implied acknowledge ment of her crimes. Before leaving the condemned cell hymns were sung. ' Safe in the arms of Jesus ' being one of the wretched creatures favorite hymns, during the singing of which her voice could be distinctly heard m.i-r,Vrr H, Strong men present could with diffi culty restrain tears. ' Abide with me fast falls the Eventide ' was then chanted, at the conclusion of which the Sheriff aiid Deputy approached the cell and made the formal demand.
