GREEN'S PLAINS. August 15, 1888. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 18 August 1888

GREEN'S PLAINS. August 15, 1888. it be impossible "to suggest any improvement in the weather at present. The slight rise in the price of wbeat is hAving an agreeable effect on the crops, which are growing rapidly, under the impression that they will be of some value at harvest time. Mice are yet very troublesome here, though not quite as plentiful as they were some time back. Some very astonishing tales are told of their depredations. A gentleman whose word is reliable to a certain extent, is responsible for the following, which to say the least of it is a very singular case. Finding that the mice had used np all his corn sacks and tar paulins, and had commenced operationson his harness he purchased two large im ported, self-acting, mice-proof oats, of the male persuasion, and having led them home behind his cart he shut them in for the night in an out house, where the mice were wont to hold their midnight revels. Tbe mice were just then busy with the lining of a saddle. Before reti...

BARUNGA. August 14. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 18 August 1888

BARTXNGA. August 14. { I wish to draw attention to far mers and owners of horses that thej may be on the aler,t because there are bj all account rather suspicious person or persons about this neighborhood. Mr John Jaimeson on last Tuesday night or Wednesday morning the 7th or 8th inst. found one of bis young horses with a piece of No. 10 steel wire twisted around its ncck, and be is of opinion that had the horse been a quite beast he would bare lost it. But it was just the reverse, for if anybody tries to lead it he is very handy with his front feet, and so it must have been in this case, for the wire was evi dently put there for the purpose of leading it away. Mr Jaimeson is offer ing five pounds to anyone that lead to the conviction of the would be thieves.

MINING. MOUNT SHAMBOCK G-.M. Co., LIMITED. -We are indebted to a mining gentle man of weli-bnown standing fcr the fol lowing -- This Company has been for some time past saving and stacking their richest and most refractory metalic, or mineral ores, which are most antagonistic to their pro cess of amalgamation. And of this mineral, there is being some quantity saved, as it has given by other treat ments very high returns; a solid block was forwarded to Mr Hamilton of Gym pie, weighing 20 lbs , and in which no trace of gold was visible. By Mr Hamilton's perfect treatment three but tons of different pore metals were pro duced from it, the quantities being as follows, and value:-10 dwts. 2 grs. of gold, worth £4 4a lid per oz.; 2 dwts. 8 grs. of silver, worth 4s per oz. and a return of 8 per cent, .of pure metalic bis muth, worth 5s per lb.; or an average of 56 ozs. per ton, iof value mentioned, and 11 ozs. of silver; this with the 8 per cent, of bismuth brings - this mineral ore to abo...

COCOANUT. August 16. 1888. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 18 August 1888

COCOANUT. August 16. 1888. i The Melbourne Exhibition is not creating any sensation amongst oar farm ers. We have had beautiful weather for several weeks past-sunshine and rain almost ever? day, which has greatly im proved the appearance of the wheat and grass. The return match between Cocoanut and au eleven of JSinnes came off yester day at Paekeville. Great interest was taken in the match. The Ninnis was a much stronger team than played on the 4th instant, on their own ground, as it in cluded seyeral different men. Norris deseryes a word of praise for his smart ness behind the wickets. Play was not started till noon, consequently there was not sufficient time to finish before sunset and the light bad become bad, the Ifinnes winning I think with 6 runs to spare.

Kadina & Mallaroo Times KADINA, SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 1883. THE BUDGET. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 18 August 1888

EHMBB k $E>nllaraa ?iwts KADINA, SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 1883. THE BUDGET. Tax Tceasurer in delivering his Bud. get speech- on Thursday was in a much happier frame of mind than fcis predecessors of late years. Not only was hein a position to Bay that the transactions of: the past year showed & surplus of £100,000, bat that after going intii the estimates" of ex penditure there is every probability of securing an equally handsome surplus this year,And that without any increase ; of taxatipu. There m»j be grave differences of opinion as to tbe wisdom of securing so much revenue from indirect taxation, and doubts as to the correctness of some of the estimates of revenue. But apart from these, and after making due allowance for the good season, it is only fair to say tfiaft the Government deserve a good deal of credit for the improved state of affairs. They have exercised strict economy, have accomplished perhaps more than any Ministry that has preceded them in securing permanen...

PROPOSALS TO AMALGAMATE THE ADELAIDE STOCK EXCHANGES. (By Telegraph.) Adelaide, Friday evening. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 18 August 1888

PROPOSALS TO AMALGAMATE THE ADELAIDE STOCK EX CHANGES. (By Telegraph.) Adelaide, Friday evening. There are now three close rooms in the Stock Exchange, the membership of each being about the same (about eighty). Lately a proposal has been made for the amalgamating of Nos. 2 and 3 rooms, known as the South Australian and Com mercial Exchanges respectively, and a meeting of the former was held yesterday | to discuss matters. It appears the latter , Exchange has about £1,500 in the bank j and a lease of the room, while the South Australian has over £2,000 to the good. A Committee was appointed to enter into negotiations for an amalgamation of the Rooms, but strong opposition will be offered to its being carried into effect, on the ground that it is difficult to arrive at an equal basis.
