Judeinp by the average published speeimens of smart Stiyinfirg, the rising generation of children are little better than idiots. And the parents must surely be but little better than the children, for in most cases they are the publishers of the sunbursts of infantile imbeciii'v which dazzle us from the napes of our periodicals. I may seem to speak with some heat, not to say a suspicion of personal spite ; and I do admit that it nettles me to hear about so man) gifted ini .n's in these days, and remember that I ScMom said anything smart when I was a child. I tried it once or twice, but it WM not popular. The family were not expecting brilliant remarks fron me, and so they snubbed me sometimes am1 spanked rae the rest. But it makes my flesh creep...

Huw Mark Twain Once Edited an Agricultural Taper, I did not take the temporary editorship of an agricultural paper without niisfcivin 's. Neither would a landsman take command of a ship without misgivings. Bat I was in circumstances that made the salary an object. The regular editor ot the paper was going off for a holiday, ami I accepted the terms he offered, and took his place. The sensation of being at work again was luxurious, and I wrought all the week with unflagged pleasure. As I left the office, toward sundown, a group of men and boys at the foot of the stairs dfepened with one impulse, and gave me passageway, and I heard one of them say : "That's him!" I was naHirally pleased by this incident. The next morning I found a similar group at the foot of the stairs, and scattering couples and individuals standing here and there in the street, and over the way, watch...
