ONE SUMMEBS EXPERIENCE . ADA E . H . Frank , what in the world are we going to do this summer ? Do ? Why , keep right on living , I suppose , was the laughing reply . I mean , must we board ? Well , a slim purse doesnt ; admit of much argument . I m sick to death of boarding , with a little quiver of the under lip . So am I , pet . But can we afford anything else ? I do wish we could keep house ! pleadingly . I should like it , but I could scarcely afford to hire a servant . How would you manage the work , with baby , too ? I think I could do everything except the washing , and baby is nearly a year and a half old . He wouldnt be so much care in the country . Where ! explaimed her husband , I didnt suppose you were thinking about leaving town . Why not , when your business as a teacher gives you eight long weeks of vacation ? Couldnt you find a little oottage not too far away ? I can try , was the oheery response . It will do no harm to Be on the lookout , as we shall be obliged to ...

SOME DAY . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 15 January 1885

SOME DAY . JULIA M . BOBY . Do vou remember when first we met t Im sure your memory cannot forget When in the gay , bewildering dance , We caught the light of a love-lit glance . As the years sped on with time apace , lhave not forgot your smiling face ; And some day while treading the busy street . Some day , I trust , we shall once more meet . What if I think of you once in awhile Tlitnk of your blush , of your winning smile . Your dreamy eyes that have haunted mine As memorys colors over me shine I Is it in vain I let my youth come back In colors warm , and with it nothing lack ; Andpaintfor myself a pleasant greeting . As hand to hamlwe shaltpress inmeetingt Then let me think of you once in awhile , Think of your blush , of your winning smile . For some day , Pmsure , well certainly meet . Some day , while treading the busy street .

Another Great Exposition . We have received the prospectus of a National Agricultural , Horticultural , Mineral and Live Stock Exhibition , to be held at Louisville , Ky ., under the auspices of the Southern Expoitlon Company , and the Department of Agriculture of the General Government , in which it is proposed to hold a great National Agricultural , Horticultural , Mineral and Live Stock Exhibition in which these interests will be the prominent features . It is to be essentially a farmers exposition , not an exposition to whieli farmers are invited to see the progress made in the work of others , but an exposition of the great agricultural work of onr country . It is proposed to have this exposition at Louisville , Ky ., for the reason that within a radius of HOO miles of Louisville there are 11 , 000 , 000 of people . Sorg-hum Sugar . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 15 January 1885

Sorg-hum Sugar . Prof . Wylie , of the Department of AgricnlI ture , has just returned from a tour in the West , where he has been studying the sorghum sugar industry . He finds the production of sorghum sugar steadily increasing , the amount manufactured in this country in 1884 being nearly double that made in 188 H , and the number of largo factories having largely increased . Still there is little encouragement for the prosecution of the experiment , for the price offered for tho sugar after manufacture is so row that there is little profit . Prices generally for sugar are very low , so much so as to be quite as discouraging for the sugar growers of the South as for those of the sorghum belt . Much of the sorghum sugar made now ranks high iu quality , aud brings as good price as the Southern or imported sugars of that grade , but there is little profit in sugar making for anybody at the present prices . The quantity of sorghum sugar made in this country last year will probably am...

Cheap Fruit-Dryer . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 15 January 1885

Cheap Fruit-Dryer . A correspondent writing from Shelby County , Tennessee , gives in the Planter and Granger a description of what he claims to be an efficient home-mado fruit-dryer . He says that it is composed of three things—a hogshead , a fruit-tree shipping box and a small stove . The hogshead stands on end , and has a door sawed out of tho side to admit the stove ; a hole eighteen inches square is sawed in the head to let the heat of the stove up , and a six or seven foot fruit-tree box ( such as you ship a thousand pounds of fruit in ) is stood on end on top of the hogshead , having the lower end knocked out , and being fitted carefully over the hole in the head of the hogshead . The heat will thus ascend from the stove through the top of the hogshead , and on up through the long box . A pipe hole is made in the hogshead opposite the door to let the smoke out , so that none of it ascends through the box . Now , the lid of the box is swung with hinges , making the whole side ...

In the latter chain of South America , a sailor from England procured tho first one brought to London as a present to his wife , aud remarking that if lost at sea in a subsequent voyage the shrub would be aniemento . It was what is now known usfitufltia fitlyeits , the most beautiful of this shrub kind , and after it had attained to a large growth for that climate , Fusehia visited Loudon and in walking along the sidewalk it attracted his admiration . An Inquiry Ahout Silk Culture . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 15 January 1885

An Inquiry Ahout Silk Culture . One who is interested in silk culture , at the request of a lady friend , makes the following inquiry : Has silk culture proved to be a success in this country ? Would it be advisable for one to make the attempt with a reasonable expectation of making it profitable ? If so , whore and of whom could the necessary instructions be obobtaiued ? Wo -visit to state that , while silk culture has proved successful so far as attempts to produce silk in small quantities is concerned , we know of no one who is deriving a profit from it as a business . It is suitable in France and Italy for the reason that lal tor is cheap and the children are made to do the work . At certain periods much labor ami care must be bestowed , and tho jinifltx are derived by producing silk as a source of giving employment to idle laborers . Wo believe , however , that those who have no employment at certain times can devote the hours , that would otherwise be lost , in that direction ...
