Stock Food Recommended by an Eminent Authority . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 12 January 1907

Stock Food Recommended by an Eminent Authority . Professor Thomas Shaw has this to say in reference to Stock Foods : They will always be found useful when properly made . The time will never come when Intelligent feeders will cease to use them . The necessity for using them and the advantage therefrom will become greater as foods become Increasingly dear . Whether it will be profitable to feed them will depend upon the necessity for using them and on their cost . My special desire , however . Is to show ( hat they have a place in the economy of intelligent feeding . The question of price must be fought out between buyer and seller . With this indorsement from one of the foremost authorities on feeding in the country , it would seem that the value of feeding tonics , etc .. is unquestionable : therefore , the only problem is at what price such foods cease to become profitable . In Bulletin No . 106 issued by the Hatch Experimental Station they recommend the use of cerlain medicinal t...

[ HORTIClLTlRE l [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 12 January 1907

[ HORTIClLTlRE l FORESTRY IN OHIO . —I . The Experiment Station has begun work in forestry on its own farms In a small way and on a much larger scale in co-operation with about 400 landowners of the state . There are also many farmers who have grown or purchased trees on their own account . Possibly there are 1 , 000 farmers within the state who have begun forestry operations on a small scale , either by planting trees or by giving some attention and care to their woodlots . In the southern part of the state are some large tracts of second growth timber , owned mostly by mining companies . Several of these tracts , comprising 10 , 000 acres or more , are to be held as forest reserves . The station has made examinations , measurements and calculations which show conclusively that a young forest can be made to pay good interest even on land worth | 50 per acre . This does not mean for catalpa and locust alone , but for some of our best native trees as well . This being the case it is ...

THE VALUE OF CHARCOAL [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 12 January 1907

THE VALUE OF CHARCOAL Few People Know How Useful it is in Preserving Health and Beauty . Costs Nothing to Try . Nearly everybody knows that charcoal is the safest and most efficient disinfectant and purifier in nature , but few realize its value when taken into the human system for the same cleansing purpose . Charcoal is a remedy that the more you take of it the better ; it is not a drug at all , but simply absorbs the gases and impurities always present in the stomach and intestines . and carries them out of the system . Charcoal sweetens the breath after eating onions and other odorous vegetables , and completely neutralizes a disagreeable breath arising from any habit or indulgence . Charcoal effectually clears and improves the complexion , it whitens the teeth and further acts as a natural and eminently safe cathartic . It absorbs the injurious gases which collect in the stomach and bowels ; it disinfects the mouth and throat from the poison of catarrh . All druggists sell char...

THE TAX QUESTION . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 12 January 1907

THE TAX QUESTION . We have read with great interest your editorial on the subject of tax inquisitors . There is one phase of the situation which has given the Ohio Tax League a great deal of concern and that is the fact that where the tax inquisitor catches the owner of stock and bonds and other intangible evidences of wealth , it results in driving the same wealth out of the state . These forms of wealth are so constructed by nature that they can be easily removed and where the owner is caught once he makes sure that he arranges matters so that the particular property will never be taxed again . On account of the nature of this class of property and the difficulty of taxing it , statistics show that our efforts to tax it have but driven it into safe hiding or have driven it from the state , and the amount of taxes today paid in Ohio on this class of property , in comparison with the total amount owned in the state , is so small as to be entirely Insignificant . It is only too true ...

CURRENT COMMENT . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 12 January 1907

CURRENT COMMENT . The year 1906 was A YEAR OF HIGH one of wonderful recRECORDS . ords In production and trade . The last five years have marked a period of almost unprecedented prosperity and it is really astonishing that the year just past could duplicate the great records of 1905 . The latest statistics and official estimates show that those records were not only duplicated but many were broken and in the aggregate the year 1906 stands as the most prosperous year in the history of the nation . There has scarcely been a disturbing element in the year s trade . Labor controversies have been few and of little Importance . In manufacturing , commerce , finance and agriculture the year s performance has never been equalled . This is best shown by the statistics which follow and which are taken from the latest tables compiled from reliable trade journals and official reports . The following table shows the total production of the principal crops for 1906 compared with previous record ye...
