Miss Grace Fallis Bullard , of Mechanicsburg , 111 ., was appointed by the Sangamon County Domestic Science Association , to represent the Capital county in the State Cooking School , conducted by Mrs . Borer , in the Womans Building on the Illinois State Fair Grounds during the 1899 exhibition . Miss Bullard made the most of the opportunity and makes the following interesting report of her observations , during the continuance of ! Mrs . Rorer s demonstrations . * As the representative of Sangamon county , I have been requested to say a few words in regard to Mrs . Rorer s Cooking School . It is generally known that the Legislature of Illinois at its last session appropriated a certain sum of money for the purpose of erecting on the State Fair Grounds , a Womans Building , to be used principally for the purpose of teaching and demonstrating the principles of domestic science ....
MORE PROSPERITY [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 November 1899
MORE PROSPERITY For months past the official returns show a larger and larger number of transfers filed in the office of the American Berkshire Association of Springfield , 111 ., than for the corresponding months of 1898 . The breeders of recorded Berkshires of average good quality and pedigree are quite generally enjoying an unusually large trade , especially is this the rule with advertisers . The fact that there is more space devoted in The Farm Home to Berkshire advertisements than can be found in all the other live stock and agricultural papers of the United States combined , is the best of evidence that can be presented that more sales of Berkshires can be made for less expenditure for advertising in The Farm Home than elsewhere . We repeat that breeders who have continued their advertising long enough to Introduce their herds and have promptly and fully answered inquiries , report unusual number of sales at better prices than heretofore obtained . The increase in the number ...

MATING FOR 1900 CROP OF PIGS [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 November 1899
MATING FOR 1900 CROP OF PIGS This is a subject that demands the earnest attention of Berkshire breeders everywhere . So much of next year s success depends on the proper mating of breeding stock this fall that it should receive the very earnest and intelligent attention of all breeders who are determined , if possible , to raise more and better pigs than heretofore . For all close observing breeders are aware of the increasing demand for well bred Berkshires , and should prepare for a larger crop of pigs for the 1800 trade . The trade in pigs during 1899 has been unprecedented , and from present indications the demand in 1900 will be still greater . The writer has been either an exhibitor or visitor at our leading state fairs for over thirty years , and never before knew of more than half as many pigs changing hands at either Indiana or Illinois state fairs , as were sold during the present fall , and purchasers are each year becoming more and more discriminating as to the quality o...

CONG-DONS BERKSHIRES . Mr . T . J . Congdon , Pawnee City , Neb ., writes : We made a fine showing of Berkshires at our county fair . The Berkshires , instead of being in the minority , outnumbered by about five to one all other breeds . There were five Berkshire herds driven into the show ring , and they were as fine a lot as was ever shown in the west . The number of Berkshires on exhibition was seventy four head , and not one but what was deserving of a ribbon at a state fair show . Mr . J . W . German , of Wymore , did the judging , and he complimented us very highly on the showing we made . My winnings were as follows : First , on boar one year old and over , with Baron Duke XX . 48291 ; first on boar six months and under one year ; second , on boar under six months ; first , I on sow one year old and over , with Wood Dale Stumpy , 48202 ; first and second , on sow six months and under one year ; first and second , on sow under six months ; first , on sow with litter , and swee...

i ^ ft- ^ f ^ j 1 )?}^ . GREATLY GRATIFIED . Prof . E . Davenport , Dean of the Illinois College of Agriculture , writes I am greatly gratified at the kindly feeling of the public toward our work . Experience this year has proved the fact that what we needed was better instruction . Our students are an earnest lot and are doing excellent work . I am exceedingly anxious that the next General Assembly provide for a department of Domestic Econoni / in the university . Farmers girls are asking what we can do for them in that respect . It is certainly not right to educate one-half of the people and not provide for the other half . We must provide for the girls as well as the boys , else what can we expect of the children ?
