IT'S THE CITY FOLKS THAT HAVE TO WORRY ! [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

ITS THE CITY FOLKS THAT HAVE TO WORRY ! Corrects Our Statements . Obion , Tenn . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . The Berkshire hogs , Cheviot sheep and Angora goats on the Cloverdale Stock Farm are doing well notwithstanding the fact that we have been having the most severe weather , in several years ; snow twelve inches deep , with the mercury 2 degrees below , makes it hard on live stock even when they have all the comforts that we can provide for them . We are proud to see cut of our prize winning gilt in the January issue of the B . W . In your writeup you erred in stating that she was Junior Champion at Chicago . She was first in her class but was not Junior Champion . She was Junior Champion at the Tennessee State Fair . We make this correction as we are sure it was an oversight in the writer . The writer erred again as to her weight , which he gave as 240 pounds . She weighed there on the official scales the day after she was shown 328 pounds . This gilt continues a...

The Berkshire Association [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

The Berkshire Association One of the factors that make for success in breeding Berkshires is that our breed has but one pedigree registry Association , whereas the other leading breeds have two or more . We have ut one Association that records pedigrees , and it is a strong , highclass organization that is conducted on a business basis in the interest of the breed . Outsiders or men contemplating a connection with a breed of hogs do not fail to consider this fact at its full worth . They find out that Berkshire breeders are good men who can work together through their breed society for common ends , and this knowledge makes them favorable to Berkshires . No man wants to enter a fraternity of breeders who are constantly warring among themselves . No man wants to connect with a breed whose advocates are divided into mud-slinging factions . Outsiders can be invited into the Berkshire camp ¦ with the assurance that they will find the Berkshire Association working harmoniously through al...

Personal Knowledge of a Busi ness . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

Personal Knowledge of a Busi ness . Most breeders of Berkshires have a close working knowledge of their business , and can talk or write about it in a way that inspires confidence . A few , however , breed hogs by proxy and have little or no actual personal knowledge of their herds . These men , when visited by outsiders , are unable to answer some of the most commonplace questions put to them . The result of this personal unfamiliarity with their herds is that visitors lose confidence . Men like to patronize men who know their business from personal experience in it . It is not necessary that a Berkshire breeder should know and carry in his head a great mass of statistical information about his herd , ready to talk it on the slightest provocation , but we believe that the man who knows his hogs personally and can talk about them with that confidence and ease , which come from intimate knowledge , has a better chance to make sales to visiting strangers than the man who refers all qu...

Who ' s Who In Berkshires . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

Who s Who In Berkshires . To The Berkshire World : —Replying to your request for a sketch to be used in the Who s Who in Berkshires department , permit me to say that it will be very dry reading . I am not one of the many who purchased a pair of pigs and was afraid to go home . From my earliest recollections I have favored pure bred Short Horn cattle and Berkshire hogs . My boyhood days were spent in Omaha , Neb ., and St . Louis , Mo . At the early age of ten , while living in Omaha , my brother andI were sent to Racine college , Racine , Wis ., and entered the grammar school of that then splendid institution . I spent three as happy years as it is possible for a boy to spend . Nothing to do but study a little , skate and coast in the winter , swim in Lake Michigan in the early summer and fall , play cricket , baseball and football . We played football in those days and had lots of fun . Sometimes there were over one hundred on a side and the goals were nearly one-fourth of a mile ...

Berkshires in the North [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

Berkshires in the North Farmington , Minn ., Jan . 8 , 1910 . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —We are having a very good demand for Berkshires and our sales have been mosty to old customers . We naturally feel gratified for this , for it spurs us on to try and raise better Berkshires in the future . Our herd is passing splendidly through the cold winter and although the thermometer has ranged below the zero mark for several days the hogs enjoy the crisp atmosphere part of the time . Located in the north we , do not have the advantages of our southern breeders , but nevertheless we think we can grow a more vigorous hog , and from the past year s record can folow him into the show ring and come within reach of our fellow breeders from the south . Although Berkshires are not as numerous here as some other breeds , yet we are gradually gaining ground , and at the late Minnesota State Fair the Berkshires from the Farmer Farm won the Championship over all breeds . Th...

A Good One in the Ohio State Sale . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

A Good One in the Ohio State Sale . To The Berkshire World . The attention of Berkshire breeders everywhere is called to the bred sow sale at Columbus , Ohio , February 16 , 1910 , where an extra lot of high class bred sows will be sold , representing the tops of the leading Berkshire herds in Ohio . Among the really high class sows , let us mention Premier Loyalist , a grand young sow consigned by G . W . Bowsher & Sons , Wapakoneta , Ohio . Premier Loyalist is a perfect model of her prolific dam and owing to the fatal 1 accident which befell her well known sire , Premier Lee 2 d 83201 , at the beginning of the breeding season , she will undoubtedly be one of the last daughters of Premier Lee 2 d , offered at public auction . She possesses that rare quality so much desired by the critical breeder and is bred to one of the sensational show boars of the year , Royal Duke 73 d 114132 , first prize senior yearling at Ohio State Fair and a winner at the leading State Fairs o...

Sells Half Interest in Two Great Hogs . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

Sells Half Interest in Two Great Hogs . Tb the Editor of The Berkshire World : —You will be interested in hearing that we have closed a deal with Dr . George B . Lewis of Owego , N . Y „ by which we have sold the Doctor a half interest in two of our herd boars , one , Lees Artful 1 Premier 20 th 112768 , who is one of the last great good sons of Premier Longfellow 68600 , who was king of all Berkshires , and this worthy son is a brother to J . W . Russwurm s Grand Champion boar , Lee s Artful Premier 12 th . Dr . Lewis was very fortunate in getting a half interest in this great boar , who has the longest body , broadest head , shortest and broadest nose , great heart girth , hams covering well the hocks , tail setting high . Massive from tip to tip , with extreme heavy bone and stands upon the best of toe . S and pasterns . We think this boar equal to any and superior to many of Premier Longfellows sons .
