'TONJO'S GENERAL By GEORGE SIEBEL1 (Copyright, by J. B Lippincott Co.) The polite magistrate of an inland city-at one side a high desk, at the rear a grated door opening into a cor ridor of cells. Half-a-dozen policemen and several reporters in various .in dolent attitudes, too lazy even to fan themselves. Behind the desk a tall man with a military bearing and an empty sleeve. Such is the scene. Officer Riley marched his prisoner up to the desk-an Italian, swarthy and sullen. In a country where taxes are levied for every window in a house, is it wonder that little sunshine falls on the people's faces? The tall, military man fingered a letter as he looked sternly down at the prisoner. "I got "im, yer honor!" said Officer Riley. "You fellows are a blame nuisance," said his honor, "and I'm going to make an example of you. You were grinding your organ along Sylvania avenue." The Italian laid his arm lovingly over the instrument suspended from his shoulder by straps and sustained by a so...

The above is a picture of George Grayson, one of the oldest pioneers of Montana, and who now resides at the old Fitzpatrick ranch west of town. Mr. Grayson has been in this state for over 40 years. His life during that time was full of dangerous adventures, hunting, and fighting the Indians. Enlarged Homesteads The department at Washington has recently sent out for the guidance of land officials a circular in which some points in the new law are interpreted and others, in a way, cleared up. Knowing the keen interest taken by the people in this law, which is of the most important to Montana enacted in years, we herewith reprint the germain portion of the document: The Registers and Receivers, United States Land Offices, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Arizona and New Mexico. Gentlemen: The following instruc tions are issued for your guidance in the administration of the act of con gress, approved Feb. 19, 1909, "to provide for an enlarged homestead" (Pub...

7Beating the Bo7kies By JOHN IRVING DAY In the 'Realm of High and Lora Finance tell you, Danny, it's hard S ly worth the candle. The police are keeping a close watch on pool rooms and are liable to nab the whole bunch before you could turn a trick." Doe Floyd, master mind of the High Rollers' club, was uttering words of wisdom to Danny Roberts, player of juvenile roles in the life drama enacted by the members of the club. "But, old man, I've just to sell the professor a package, and there's noth ing that would be so easy. He's bugs on the races. I've met him and got his confidence, and he doesn't know that I've got it in for him so hard that I'm going to make him take the high jump." "But why have you got to resort to the old 'wire game' to land him?" ques tioned Floyd. "And you haven't told me what gave you your grouch against him. Tell me about it." "Well, if you only knew him, you wouldn't need to ask why anyone wouldn't want to hand him a package," replied Danny. * *w* Could Her...

oi -. ~I1 HE ENTERS A DARK PLOT It seems to be just one series of ups and downs with Pa and I. One day we are kings and things and the next day we are just things and not kings or ninespots or anything in the deck except it's jacks. That short stay at the ranch of the Michigan man in Africa, which seemed like being sat down from hades in darkest Africa to heaven in America, terminated just as everything else does with us. After we had enjoyed the morning with the wild animals on the race track, Pa and the Michigan man set into a game of draw poker with some other sharps and the cowboy, and they must have stacked the cards on Pa and the cowboy, for before night they had got all Pa's money away, and the cowboy was burst, too, and in the evening Pa put the airship up against a creamery and a drove of Jerseys, and Pa lost the airship, and then Pa gave checks on a bank in the river Nile, and lost all the checks and about a pint of diamonds, and when we went to bed the Michigan man said h...

MEAGHER COUNTY, M01'TANA, FRIDAY, AUGUST, 1:1, 1909 No. 7 lAIL STORM IN JUDITH BASIN NIt as Much Damage as First Re ported--Many Wiadows Broken in Moore and Lewistown. Moore was the center of a hail storm Wednesday afternoon, which covered about three miles by one and one-half miles wide. Some of the hailstones were as large as good sized eggs and covered the ground at some places to the depth of about three inches. It was at first reported that the entire crops around Moore had been com pletely destroyed, but further inves tigations show that only the crops on a few farms have been destroyed. It seems that the hail started four miles from Philbrook toward Moore, for no hail fell at Philbrook. Their was no hail, but a heavy rainfall at Stanford; Straw, no hail; Natal, no hail; Hedges, no hail; Benchland, no hail. A large number of windows were broken in both Lewistown and Moore.
