The transportation question is one of greatest importance te American farmers. It is probable, however, tliat the phase of this subject tliat has been least discussert by public journals the making and mend ing of country reads is quite as important and less understood than any ether. A large proportion of American farm products never reach the railroads. They arc consumed en the farm or in the villages and cities whither the farm er's team and -wagon convey them. Most of these farmers live se far from market that one full day at least is consumed in marketing a lead of prednce. If the reads arc uniformly geed and level a team will draw two tens of grain mere easily than en ordinary reads they will draw half that amount. The Oil Producers' Union'accempanies its surrender te the Standard oil company with a pretest which shows that the Union feels that it has net done a very noble thing, and that it needs a place te put the blame of it. It declares that it throws down its arms and accepts the Standard's terms because ;the state administration of Pennsylvania, in its legislative, executive and judicial de partments, sought te thwart its efforts te bring its enemies te justice. Yesterday, February 22, was the anni versary of the birth-of Geerge "Washington, the father of his country, the first presi dent of the United States the first in war, the first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen. Falling en Sunday this year, there was no general celebration of the day. In some cities, however, the cel ebration took place en Saturday and in ethers te-day. In Lancaster the only ob servance of the day is the waving of flags from several Hag-staffs and the ringing of the Washington fire company's bell. Chrlldren's Shew.
