CAMPBELL & II'DEEMOT, EDITORS AND PROPRIETORS. HIPVUillAV 3IOBXIX'. AI OCST16. We are indebted to Hon. XVaitmanT. Willey for a copy of the eighth census report upon agriculture. There was great excitement in New York yesterday and the night before in consequence of the the failure of one or two large bouses in gold and stocks. The whole market gave way. The re cent bank defalcations, and other dis coveries of corruption, brought on a sort of panic. The Fire Lout Xight. The particulars in regard to the fire last night are given in our local col umns. The necessity for some more effective means of dealing with the dangerous and destructive element must have been apparent to everj' one present. And these means we never can have short of a couple of first class lire engines. Had there been a high -wind last night there is no telling where the tire would have reached lie fore the first stream of water was thrown upon it. The disaster in all probabili ty would have been wholesale alon...

fthtStddligtarcr. wu?fjiB.tr?OBXisB. AV(,|ST is. Disastrous Fire.?The fire which oc curred last evening was the most ex tensive and disastrous which has occur- 1 red in our city for several years, aud had it not been for the early hour at which it commenced, and the calmness of the night, the very best business por tion of the city must have been des troyed. As it was, had it not been for the prompt and energetic action of our firemen, the loss would have been almost irreparable. At the late hour at which we write we cannot speak pos itively as to the origin of the lire. It commenced in a small frame stable in . the rear of Mr. Victor Saugviot\s Bar ber shop. The first alarm was about eight o'clock; the whole stable was al- . most instantly in a blaze, which soon communicated to the three story build- i ing occupied as a wholesale leather store by Wheat & Sons, the upper part' being used by Mr. II. 13. Wheat as a family residence. We believe the I stock was saved, though some of...

&ht3ntdiigmcm Tin iUiPAT WQHMXi. TTTTi sri^ The Fneost Toohat Bonnso? It is a matter of surprise to ull who have examined the premises which were the scene of the conflagration, that so little property was destroyed. Originating in the most compactly built portion of the city, with some half-dozen old frnnie buildings furnishing fuel for the flames which had gotten fuiriy under way, it seemed for a time as though the whole I square must be destroyed, and this would probably have been the case had it not been for the remarkable combi nation of fortunate circumstances, ne stable in which the lire originated was located directly in the rearof the prem ises of Mr. s. G. Robinson, it is not know n if it was kindled by accident or design. It was used by Sir. Stamm, of the Pemberton House, who savs that nobody connected with his- establish ment had been in the stable for some time previous to the breaking out of the fire. The houses of Mr. S. G. FRIDAY -IDKnau, AKUST 18. ,TJ,,E ,1'"?,VOST ?OAni).?The necesS^ which has heretofore made it necessary to have a strong military guarcl in this city no longer exists, and the opinion >s very general, that the force necessarv to do guard duty might very properlv be reduced with advantage to the city and the treasury of the general govern ment. The maintaining of a regiment at a post like this, where there is 110 real duty except for a very few men, is a useless and foolish expenditure of money. There are none who realize this more fully than the soldiers thus em ployed, and they are constantly restless and dissatisfied. As there is no euemv in the field, they feel as though thev should be sent homo to be mustered out and if the government has 110 other need for their services than stationing them at such places as Wheeling, even regiment in the service should l>o dis banded immediately. All the West Virginia regiments hav ing been discharged, there is not iikclv to be any more ...
