JAMESTOWN. Tbe Alert this Morning Primenta to the World a Bird's Eye View of the Bus iness in Jamestown. Behold for Yourself the Marvelous Rise and Wealth of the Queen of the James and Contemplate its Possibilities. From tbe Daily,' Wednesday. Jamestown's Business. The Alert takes pleasure this morning in presenting to its readers at home and abroad statement of the business of the town which was obtained by personal canvass of the town and may be relied upon as substantially correct. We have under-rated rather than over-rated for the reason that people in the east, who have grown up from childhood in a country which reached its full develop ment before they were born cannot com prehend the rapidity of progress and de velopment in the northwest. With rail roads out into our fertile prairies in ad vance of settlement, carrying the com modities and even luxuries of the east to" the very door of the pioneer, the mechan ic provided with the aid of every conceiv able kind of mac...

He was not remarkably pretty to look at. His plumage was not nearly so brilliant as the black turkey's, Neither did it present the downy smooth ness of the white turkey's ermine coat but the gray gobbler would go strutting about the barnyard, with head thrown back, with wattles vibrating in a most saucy fashion, and With tail feathers flaunt)ngly disposed a la peacock. Th© Alert DAILY AND WEEKLY MARSHALL McCLURE. The next territorial legislature will con sist of ten republicans and two democrats, in the council, and five democrats and nineteen republicans in the house. Baying that Dakota went republican by 25,000 majority, tha Omaha Republican says the democratic party has therefore 26,000 reasons for opposing the admission of Dakota into the sisterhood of states. "If the natural hay crop of Dakota could be gathered," said a dealer in hay, "and placed in bales In the Chicago and New York markets, and sold at present market rates, it would pay off the nation al debt." Governnor Ordway has issued, in com pliance with territory law, a proclama tion to sheriffs and district judges, an nouncing the completion of the peniteu tiary at Sioux Falls, and directing that after Dec. 31 all prisoners will be sent to Sioux Falls instead of Detroit, Michigan. LOCAL MATTERS. A Suggestive Scheme of Benevolence. While the people down in the states, New York for example, are housed up by three feet and a half of snow and so cold that it. freezes the porcelain knobs off the doors, the people of Dakota may congratulate themselves on the comfort t ble climate they enjoy, and just enough snow to make tne sleighing and traveling good. But while we congratulate our selves upon these conditions and sur roundings of weather we must not forget the common bond of sympathy with our less favored fellow-men down in the states even though they do tell appalling tales of exaggerated falsehood abovt the climate of Dakota. The Alert is a pliil antliopist on the broad guage, and has an inexhaustible fountain of benevolence and charity for suffering humanity wherever it may be found. When it knows of the snow bound and sulYering people down in Hie states, it no longer re mambe's thit they tell of snow twelve an.l fifteen fee! deep up in Dakota and of blizzar...

LOCAL MATTERS. Worthily Bestowatl. A very pleasant event took place in the dining room of the Dakota House last evening, which will no doubt lie long re membered both by the participants and the spectators. Air. and Mrs. Samuel Matthews, win have presided over the management of that hotel since last January, having resigned the posi tion and being on the point of taking their departure were taken by surprise in being pre sented with each a handsome and elegant gift from the dining room girls and other employees about the house, the gift con sisting of a beautiful gold headed cane to Mr. Matthews and an elegant silver ice pitcher to his wife, both engraved for the purpose and of the stock of Fields & Co., this city. The gifts were presented with appropriate remarks by Tlios. Ilecnan, chief cook. The value of the gifts was about $75, but to the appreciative recipi ents their value cannot be measured by dollars and cents, for it is a token of re gard and esteem which is above...

k'-f *0 The Alert DAILY AND WEEKLY MARSHALL McCLURE. The war between Delegate Pettifercw and Gov. Ordway, it seems, is carried in to Washington. Pettigrew is accredited ith saying that if justice were done the people of Dakota territory Gov. Ordway would be removed before the expiration of his term of office. A casket containing the body of Misr Anna Hudson was in October taken from the Union cemetery at Kansas City. The corpse was speedily found in a dissecting room and replaced iu the grave. The offi cers of the cemetery now claim that the affair has beeu used by discharged em ployees in an attempt to blackmail the company. The Hon. Lionel Sackville "West,British minister to the United States, went to Maryland on Tuesday to fish in the placid waters of that state. He caught a few fish, but was in turn caught and arrested by an unsympathetic officer for violating the fish laws of the state, lie was, how ever, immediately released by order of the state department.
