The whole discourse shows through out the sn iipieSsCd leeling of a man wv1,o kniii) the value of under-stat ing rather than over-stating a grave case. Few masterly philippics have ever been uttered with such bated breath as this death warrant against the President. t the other hand, 1Mr. (arpentefs reply to Mir. Sumnier is full of the Xeinuuous personalities which Mr. Garrisons condemns. If Mr. Garrison had wished to rehuke personalities, he ought not to have written a letter, to MIr. Sumner but to Mr. Carpenter. The argumentative part of Mr. C'rpenter's reply is mainly a contes sion and avuuidanee of Mr. Siinoners chaiges. Is there nepotism ? Yes, but that is nothing. Is there gift tak ing! Yes, but that is nothing. Are there military secretaries in the White House ! Yes, but that is nothliing. Did the President make war on Hayti ? Yes. but that isnoth ing. And so on. Mr. Carpenter...

K While nearly every city of the 1 United States is seething with the ex- º citewment of the political campaign, there is one quiet little spot, situated, I geographically, on a remote inlet of 1 our north-eastern coast, but intellect ually, as everybody knows, at the ex act center of the solar svtem, where the quarrels of factions do not reach 4 and the merits of candidates and plat forms have not yet been discussed. 1 Conkling and Carpenter, Sumner and Wilson, Grant and Greeley, enjamiun 1 Butler, Dawes, Biugham, John Coch rane, and Zachariah Chandler, are names for the present unheard and totally forgotten in this brick elysium, where the air is full of harmony andt the Atlantic gales are laden with the songs of Mozart and Lowell Mason. i The happy inhabitants reck little of s problenms that vex the rest of the world ; the Washington Treaty, the I Baltimore Convention, the balloting ' in Novemnber, the tariff, the taxes, touch not the serene repo...

$omethi'g Worth Fighting For. [From the S. Y. Tribune.] Although the great mass of Reve nue Reformers have accepted the de cision of the Cincinnati Convention in good faith, and have gone resolute ly to work for its nowinees, a few of them, who are unable to digest their personal disappoitmenits there, con tinue their sulky and pouting charges of fraud and corruption, and refuse to support a ticket tainted, as they say, with dishonesty in its very origin. They went to Cincinnati thoroughly convinced that the salva tion of the country depended upon the immuediate-abolition of the tariff on pig iron. But they found they were not alone in the Convention. A lar+e number of representative men ha come together in the hope of some effectual measures of reform....
