Tlie Herald Steam Printing House Is not surpassed by any Job Printing office ou tbe Pacific Coast,, outside of San Fran- Cisco, In facilities for doing job work. Low prices, good work and expedition may be relied upon at this office. A Special Flea in bis argument before the Home Railway Committee, at Washing ton, Col. Joseph V. Crawford un doubtedly made a specious and sinewy plea for Col. Scott's road. Every shortcoming of tbe Southern and Central Pacific Railways was paraded with a great flourish. Every Instance In which tbe man agers of the Southern Pacific have discriminated against the people of Southern California is made tbe most of, while of any cases in which tbe Company have made conces sions to our people no mention is made. Los IMITATION DIAMOND. Tlie Perfection the Art of Miking Falls Qemi lias Attained. [Paris Correspondence St. Louis Post.] Paris is tlie great centre for this business, which has been brought to the most astonishing perfection. The astounding transformation of grains of heavy-looking, dirty saud into a diamond of the flu est water, Is tbe daily avocation of a large number of persons who avowedly work with the intention of deceiv ing everybody but the buyer. Everything In the operation de pends upon the quality of sand, and that used for tbe purpose is brought from the forest of Fou tainebleau. Large quantities of it are sent abroad, so nigh is the re pute ln which it stands. For imi tating emeralds, sapphires and rubies, a coloring matter entirely mineral in its origin is employed, and it has been brought to a high state of perfection. About twenty years ago the principal merchant in this class of jewelry was aM. Bour guignon, whose atelier was situated at the Barriers dv TrOne. He w...

Low prices, good work and expedition ■aay be relied upon at this office. While we predicted floods and Interrupted railway communica tion*, we had hoped that the Incon venience would stop short nf the stage It has now reached. If the overland mall of Tuesday succeeded in getting through to San Francis co it made the "riffle" by a mere "scratch." We don't know posi tively whether It did or no, but the presumptions are In favor of its having gone through. But, since that date, there has not been even a pretence of mail communication with Sao Francisco. We regret to learn that the probabilities are ex treme that tbe trains will not re adme their regular running for a week from yesterday. It seems to us that there is a lamentable laxity In the postal administration of this , State...

Los The Risk Bob Ingersoll Runs. Our Washington correspondence of the 13th has just arrived. Most of its contents have beeu antici pated, but we give the following curious extract from the letter: Col. "Bob" Ingersoll still con tinues to bombard the different Christian churches with his gun so heavily overloaded with ridicule and derision that the Graphic cor respondent intimates that he had made himself amenable to an old Colonial law still in foroe here, though it fell into desuetude quite a century ago and Its existence aeems to have been forgotten for several generations until recently. The Graphic says: "Col. Bob I n gersoll ie delivering his lectures ou religious subjects here, and for his Information it should be stated tbat the Attorney-General recently de cided that the old Colonial law is still In force ln this District, never having been repealed. The first section of this law provides that 'if any person shall deny our Saviour, Jesus Christ, to be tbe son of God, or shal...

Los A DUEL BETWEEN NEGROES. Haw a Question et Soda! Standing waa Bet tied—Muskets tbe Weapons. {From tbe Philadelphia Times. 1 Negroes have been known to right duels iv the South. Only two months ago a couple of them, as black as Erebus, met on a duel ling field, from which only one re tired. The most oonspicuous affair between negroes that I now remem ber, however, took place iv Savan nah, or near Savannah, Oa., in 1872. The quarrel hinged on their respective positions in society, their names were Eugene Moore head and Jackson Brand. Botli were leader* ofsome prominence. Each of them owned a sort of res taurant. The caucuses usually took place in one of their ssloons, where, over a plate of free ice cream, they would mature their plans. Suddenly Eugene discov ered that these oonferences took place usually In Jackson's saloon. He asked Brand to meet him the next night at his (Eugene's) sa loon.
