Railroad to tile Pari Ac. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 22 December 1849

Railroad to tile Pari Ac. Our exchanges from the States contain inter- J esting reports of several public gatherings in the i western cities, at which the project of a Rocky mountain railroad to the Pacific, was spiritedly discussed. It is generally understood by our readers that considerable attention has been directed to this subject within the last few years, and it has come to be thought a most feasible enterprise, not to mention the gigantic advantages to the American people apparent on the face of the work. So much is the public interested in the scheme, that party combinations have grown out of its discussion, and while there are few who do not at once recognise its practicability, there are many among whom but one sentiment exists us to when the work shall be undertaken, the conflict of opinion arising only as to where it shall lie commenccil. There is also a dispute between I the northwest and southwest about the route pro-, posed. Mr. Whitney's great scheme of a railroad b...

The Iteeenl Murder. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 22 December 1849

The Iteeenl Murder. Wo cannot refrain from saying a few words : with regard to the recent sad occurrence at the j Bella Union which resulted in the death of one of the parties concerned, and the utter ruin and disgruce of the other participator of the affair.— The deceased has been represented as a mild and inoffensive young man, and certainly, if we are to place any credence upon tho testimony. Could not be considered in the light of the aggressor. The other participant Withers, appears to have acted from the first moment of the affair which terminated in so melancholy a manner with the most perfect recklessness, for which we can account in no other way than by the presumption that he was rendered an irrational being from the demon rum. We do not desire in the least to prejudge his case or to prejudice the community against him. We have given the main portions of the evidence as taken before tho Alcalde and at tho Coroner's inquest, which "all who run may read" anil from which they...

From Sarramrnta ( II W The Place' Times of Dec 15. came to hand at a late hour yesterday. From it we eopy the subjoined statements of the recent ftjuatter disturbances in Sacramento City : Latui Title* vn Sqtuilleis.—The citixens of Sac- ! ramento and vicinity have, for the last two or three weeks past, been somewhat excited by a movement on the part of a large portion of this community, who have taken upon them the responsibility of disputing the legality and genuineness of the title of Mr. John A. Sutter to the land in this neighborhood, which he originally obtained from the Mexican Government: anil, having satisfied themselves on this point have arrived at the conclusion that they have equal right to settle upon and <* cupy the land asthosc who presume to possess prior claims. Thf- Sr*it of O *vcrinimf. – j [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 22 December 1849

Thf- Sr*it of O *vcrinimf. - j The Pueblo de San Jose, just now presents an unusual and stirring aspect Crowded with strangers, the .State Legisla' •: about organizing, and candidates for the several offices feeling the pulse of either house, an exciting and interesting state of affairs may be inferred. Our intelligence received yesterday from that city, adds a very disagreeable finish to the picture, nevertheless It appears that for about one sixth of the number assembled there, the meanest accommodations can only be procured, and as the population is rapidly augmenting, the prospects are that very noon there will not be an empty sugar hogshead in the place. This is certainly an admirable arrangement fur the seat of government, and the j consciences of this failure on the part of the people of San Jose to accommodate the Legislature, and provide for the comfort of the members during its first session should bean immediate removal of that body to this city or to Monterey. It ia thou...
