NEW TO-DAY. Safes! Safes! F. TILLMAN, No. 00, Buttery Street, San Francisco. Sole Agent for TILTON & Ml EAIU.AND'S celebrated gj*jv-,VjLi'J Fire-Proof and Burglar Safes. 'I bis Safe is well known in the Hnj 1 market for its unsurpassed Wg£~s\jM fire-proof quality, having withstood in California, as well as in the East, the hottest fires known. We can refer to endless certificates from parties in our mining towns, where these Safes have been subjected to the most severe tests of their fire-proof qualities. The Safes are secured by our Combination Lock. This Lock is in every respect the most secure one in use : it requires the key and combination to open the Safe. If the key should be abstracted from the owner, it would be perfectly useless to the possessor, without his knowing the combination, or mental key, which thi'owner carries in his head. To those Wanting a reliable safe we offer the above cheaper than any other in the market. A large assortment on hand and to arriv...

Census of Childuen —We have been politely furnished with the census returns of Visalia School District, No. 3, by Mr. Willis Byrd, which foots up as follows: Number of children between 4 and 18 years of age, 284; Children under 4 years of age, 137; between 18 and 21, 28—Total 449. Number of Children under 21 years of age born in California, 189. We Acknowledge.—An apology is due Hon. E Burke, for placing his name under a list of politicians in noting "arrivals" last week. It is but justice to the Judge to say that he is a head and shoulders above the ordinary run of dabblers in politics, and by virtue of the position he so creditably fills is entitled to a paragraph by himself. We heard a rampant Squatter Sovereignty howler a few evenings since declare that the people of a Territory have "the same rights as those of a State." Any school boy of ordinary sense knows better. We would ask the speaker if the citizens of a territory can rote for Electors for President and Vice President t...

ry Dr. McCaffrey, the imported Black Republican orator, from Bear Valley, Mariposa county, made himself very ridiculous, and very obnoxious to the citizens of Visalia, on Sunday evening last, by using obscene and abusive language, in a loud and boisterous manner in the streets. The Doctor must have been under the influence of " minnie rifle." For the information of those Republicans who desire to trace his past record, we will refer them to the Sunday Varieties, of San Francisco, where they will find his record up to his advent into Bear Valley, together with a full length portrait. Singular Effect of an Eloquent Speaker.—lt will be recollected that previous to tbe election in Maine, Mr. Douglas traversed that State in search of his mother, and made, according to the account of bis worshippers, a number of "powerful and eloquent speeches." The Bangor Union, in alluding to his pious pilgrimage, says, ''that in fifteen towns where Senator Douglas Spoke, there was, at the recent electi...
