AUGUST 1984 &) I t Southwest Chinese Journal PAGE 7 Olympic Nutrition By Beverly Jean Gor, MS., R.D. Beverly Joan Gor it a registered dietitian now in private practice. In honor of the Olympics and because of the bur- geoning interest in fitness lately, I'd like to address the topic of sports nutrition. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about nutrition for the athlete. In fact, in recent surveys among high school coaches, who are considered somewhat well-versed in nutrition and often act as nutrition advisors to student athletes, they scored only 55% out of 100 on nutrition knowledge tests. Not only is this an interesting statistic, but it could be potentially harmful to young people under their tutelage The following are some common myths about sports nutrition and the facts researchers have discovered that proves them wrong. MYTH: Athletes need more protein in their diets. FACT: Athletes need protein in adequate amounts to maintain normal growth and repair tissue bu...

FACE 10 ^ Southwest Chinese Journal The Awkward Souls By Weinlng C. Chang, Ph.D. Psychologist Imagine that you have just dialed a number and an angry voice came from the other end of the phone yelling that you had reached a wrong number; imagine again that you reached out for a particular book on the shelf, and you looked down at your hands and found that you'd gotten the book next to the book that you intended to reach for. Somebody gave you a number; after you took it down you found out that you had gotten the digits reversed. What about those days when you were a kid and your teacher wrote something on the board for you to copy down and you had gotten the message all wrong? These are perceptual problems that all of us have experienced at one time or another. . There are also motor problems. Remember, when you first learn to write, you tried and tried again, but your lines still came out crooked? And you were so slow, when other kids had finished their exercise, you were still str...

AUGUST 1984 ^ If Southwest Chinese Journal PAGE II IN HIS TIME By George Gee In the city of Washington, many years ago, a teacher had in his class a mischievous boy who was simply a devil in disguise. He not only seemed unteachable, but also interfered with the progress of others who wanted to learn. The teacher became discouraged regarding that boy. Years later, this young man moved to a far western cify to continue his life, which was progressively worse. He became an alcoholic and simply lapsed into the worse stages. In modern days we would say that he had hit bottom While at the bottom and suffering the jeers and insults of those around him, hesomehow made his way back to the East Coast and city of Washington to look up his teacher. However, that teacher had passed away in the ensuing years, and his final address was in the cemetery of that city. The young man went to the cemetery, looked up the location and just sat gazing at the inscription on the tombstone. The inscription wa...

PAGE 12 Southwest Chinese Journal AUGUST 1984 Enjoy Job, live Longer ENJOY JOB, LIVE LONGER: OTHER TIPS Following are some very enlightening tips on how to live a longer, healthier life. In addition, one of the most vital and often overlooked aspects of health care is the annual physical examination, even if there is no appar- ent physical pain. Too often, the Asian population will neglect this all too important responsibility because they have had good health in the past. Job satisfaction can help us live longer — much like exercise, low fat diets and regular checkups — says a report in Parade magazine. Being happy at work may be as important as "any- thing physical" that we do to improve our health, Dr. John Rowe of Harvard University Medical School told Parade. • In your 20s, cut down on alcohol and drugs. And wear a seat belt — "the single most important health measure (at all ages) to keep you in the running for your old age." • In your 30's, start a low-fat, high-fiber diet to...
