tylescreen ■Dramatization about passengers who fought against 9/11 terrorists Is an Oscar-worthy trit FT ■ \ GAY HERO: Cheyenne Jackson plays out rugby player Mark Bingham, who played a key role in confronting the hijackers. By Steve Warren Contributing Film Critic B If "United 93" is a hit, you can expect air travel to decline this summer as families choose vacation destinations they can drive to. Having been out of the country on Sept. II, 2001, I've always had an extra degree of separa- tion from the horrific events of that day, which history will remember for having given George W. Bush an excuse to invade Iraq. "United 93" takes its subtle digs at the U.S. President, but in focusing on the one hijacked plane that didn't hit its target, it's a tribute to those passengers who fought back against the terrorists. Filmmaker Paul Greengrass, who did fine with fiction in "The Bourne Supremacy," affirms the position of King of Docudrama he won with "Bloody Sunday." Except for a prologu...

screen Gay for (low) pay Jui!Hard-trained Brian J. Smith may be straight, but you'd never guess it y Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer Brian J. Smith is not a gay man, but he plays one in the movies. And for a straight kid from Collin County, that's saying something. Smith first gained local attention with his phenom- enal performance in "A Clockwork Orange" at Quad C Theatre in 2002, when he was only 20 years old. He followed that with WaterTower Theatre's production of "The Brian 1* Smith (right, pictured with Cindy Pickett) plays a gay man bashed into a coma m the Dallas-filmed drama "Hate Crime," opening today at the Magnolia Theatre. Laramie Project," where he played multiple roles including the two men who murdered Matthew Shepard. It's something of an irony, then, that Smith made waves nationally portraying the victim of a gay-bashing in the indie film "Hate Crime," which opens today in Dallas. In the movie, Smith plays the half of a gay couple who is savagely beaten until he l...

life+stylevideo Casting out ciystal meth Canadian videographer sends anti-drug message at Purple Party I X Kat Coric and Jean -Pierre Perusse's "Leatherella Against the Evil Crystal Queen" screens Friday at Fuse. Attention, tweakers and Tina terrorists, the party is so over. Unfortunately, crystal meth is one nasty trend that still ravages the gay commu- nity. And during the Purple Party this weekend, a Canadian videographer is bringing an anti- crystal message in hopes of luring folks away from getting amped up on crank. At the Purple Hearts Party on Friday, co- director Kat Coric will show "Leatherella Against the Evil Crystal Queen," a disturbing six-minute short that weaves fantasy and harsh reality. In the film — a "Barbaella"-like spoof—the Evil Crystal Queen (Jae Aviance) has taken con- trol of all humanity and demonstrates her power in diabolical doses. Her one desire is to conquer the galaxy but not before a confrontation with Leatherella (played by Coric). Coric calls hers...

PAGEANT NOTES: 2006 MISS USA Kentucky's Tara Conner is Miss USA 2006. The 2006 Miss USA pageant, which aired April 21 on NBC, had all the glamour and excite- ment of a livestock auction. The show was hosted by hobbit hottie Drew Lachey and Nancy O' Del I from "Access Hollywood." Both were slightly bearded and wore too much eyeliner. After 30 painful minutes, the top 15 were announced. These contestants were then paraded n the swimsuit competition. Standouts included the enormous implants of Miss Georgia (Lisa Wiison) and Miss District of Columbia (Candace Allen), who — although poochy of tummy and big in the booty — at least resembled a real, breathing woman. Only 10 finalists moved onto evening gown competition, with the highlight being the loveiy pastel-beaded-on-nude Illusion creation worn by Miss Alabama (Halelgh Stidham). Miss Texas (Lauren Lanning), all ashy knee'd and elbowed in swimsuit competition, looked like a '57 Chevy in her shiny red gown. She did not advance to the to...

pendent dysfunction will appreciate Weir's observations on a festering relationship gone ran- cid. "What I Did Wrong" brims with wonderfully wise insights and asides galore. Scarcely a page goes by that doesn't elicit a grin or chuckle from Tom's wry observations of a mad world he has no hope of comprehending or fitting into, yet he never stops trying to do so. Some of the book's other highlights include delightful reflections on the nature of Queens, and a droll rundown of the various ways Tom might expound upon the best qualities of Justin (his favorite student and the object of his affec- tion) if he were any number of other gay or les- bian authors. What the novel isn't big on, however, is a lin- ear narrative — or for that matter, much of a plot. At its most basic, "What I Did Wrong" chron- icles a day in which Tom accompanies Richie, his best friend since high school, into Manhattan to meet a young woman whom Richie has been chatting with online. Much social awkwardness eventu...

life+styletube Bette on it Comprehensive new Davis documentary doesn't whitewash. Actress was supremely talented, disturbed and a mean bully Her epitaph said it all: "She did it the hard way." And while she did it, she smoked cigarettes the entire time. "Stardust: The Bette Davis Story," a new TCM documentary that premieres Wednesday, does a very good job piecing together the formi- dable actress' East Coast background: Daddy was distant; stage-mother Ruth Davis freeloaded off Bette. From there, it's a psychological treasure hunt as the film deconstructs her illustrious career (118 films, 11 Oscar nominations), ill-fated love life (a four-time divorcee) and the elements that made her an onscreen legend and an off-screen tyrant. Narrated by Susan Sarandon, the documen- tary includes interviews with Bette-like descen- dants: Gena Rowlands, Ellen Burstyn and Jane Fonda: When Fonda isn't fawning, she astutely dissects some of her favorite Davis acting scenes. They also interview the wei...

enjoy a sports car instead of a biggie-sized SUV, but you still want space for a mountain bike, skis or even a kayak. The 9-3 Sport Combi might be a better choice. An extended version of the 9-3 sport sedan, the Sport Combi has a three side-glass panels, silver lined tail lamps and a Texas-sized cargo compart- ment. I had no problem loading my Cannondale mountain bike inside without removing either wheel. Enlivened by a turbo-charged engine, the Sport Combi was a blast. Front wheel drive and a tight suspension system make back roads enjoyable and safe. An in-dash navigation system, six-disc CD changer and manual controls for the automatic transmission made driving the most enjoyable part of my week. Fuel economy ratings of 23/34- MPG city/highway were also welcome — espe- cially after tanking up the 9-7X blew a hole through my wallet. As with the 9-7X, beige leather seats against black carpeting were elegant. The 9-7X's assembly plant in Moraine, Ohio is a long way from Sweden. But ...
