Page 16 The Brand October 25 1996 ln-house authors abound in HSU English department By Adrian Viccellio Staff Writer Combining over 70 years of English instruction Dr. Larry Brunncr Dr. Robert Fink and Dr. Robert Hamncr have clearly distinguished themselves as major contribu- tors to the field. They have published numerous articles poems and criticisms some internationally regarding major literary figures from both the past and present. The striking similarity between the professors is their deep rooted conviction to translate the voice of the writer to the students. Despite their commmon interest in writing they arc unique in their teaching philosophies and in the way they view their professions. Dr. Brunncr a graduate of Duke University is cur- rently in his 27th year of teaching. While serving as the head of the department of English he has written two criticisms on the works of W.B. Yeats and Lord Byron. "Writing is a good discipline for the mind" he said. While writing is a val...

October 25 1996 The Brand Page 17 Hands-on experience key for athletic trainers By Kathy Muramoto Managing Editor Hardin-Simmons offers an academic program that prepares students who want to pursue a career as athletic trainers. It's a program that plays a vital part in the daily operations of HSU's athletic elite. Like most institutions in Texas HSU doesn't offer a major in this area but rather outlines an academic program emphasizing the athletic trainer aspect within the physical education or exercise science degree. David Stuckcy athletic trainer supervises the 12 students enrolled in the program. The "team" includes Kathy Burroughs Justin Davis Monica Dell Chris Farris D. J. Gililland Aaron Hajart Eugene Kirkpatrick David Reed Troy Roberts Jenny Stokes Sabrina Swindle and Heather Thompson. According to Stuckcy "The students study all areas of athletic training such as prevention evaluation treatment and rehabilitation. They work in the training room under my supervision and I a...

Page 18 The Brand October 25 1996 Riveting portrayals make this drama come alive By Chris Hatcher Editor in Chief Barry Lcvinson proves at least one thing through his hardluck venture Sleepers ensemble casts and talcs of vengeance make for beautiful music. Actually writerdirector Lcvinson plays his cards right on many fronts cre- ating an "actor's film" that's strictly for the big boys. His talc of four reform school abused youths based on author Lorenzo Carcatcrra's controversial best seller is told with such riveting precision it leaves no room for complaint; espe- cially when adulthood brings plans for revenge. And speaking of big boys let's just say that Robert DeNiro Brad Pitt Dustin Hoffman and Jason Patrick aren't your average Joe's though all have surprising- ly limited screen time in this one. It's the summer of 1966 in New York's Hell's Kitchen (west side Manhattan) when Lcvinson picks up on the young lives of four best friends. "Shakes" (Joe Perrino) along with Mikey (Bra...

October 25 1996 The Brand Page 19 Latest Grisham flick lacks in thrills By Chris Hatcher Editor in Chief As far as legal thrillers go The Chamber might not live up to the quality John Grisham fans have come to expect over the past several years; credit A Time to Kill and Dead Man Walking with the blame. Time which was adapted from the Grisham archives to the silver screen just a few short months ago and Dead Man have set phenomenal precedents in depicting capital punishment. Both films have been huge success' in 1996 and both especially Dead Man hit extra hard in the area of scntimcntalism toward the guilty. But The Chamber through its high- priced talent and even higher profiled racism doesn't compare to what the oth- ers have brought to the legalistic table over the past year. The expensive talent comes via Chris O'Donncll and Gene Hackman as young lawyer and convicted klansman in a talc that could only be told (and toler- ated) through the eyes of Grisham. Hackman ventures into n...

Along with counseling and advising Dr. Simpson went out of his way to improve professionalism development in all of his students. With the help of a letter of nomination from Dr. Simpson King who had a 3.96 GPA and four varsity let- ters won the John Egli Award for Outstanding Student Athlete in the state of Pennsylvania. Well seven years later lightening strikes again for another No. 7. So to is the prevalence of sports in the infrastructure of West Texas life. On any given autumn weekend chil- dren students faculty members parents and general enthusiasts flock to area sta- diums to get their weekly fix of one of the world's hardest drugs: football. The earth ceases to turn for three hours every Friday night as local venues arc jammed with a frenzied local popu- lace. The candor of next week's coffee shop conversation hinges on every move- ment of their community heroes. Saturday afternoons and evenings arc reserved for university gridiron warriors skilled and fluid in their art. Football is not just a game at this level it becomes a way of life; an obses- sion. Education is forgotten as institu- tions of higher learning revert to a more barbar...

October 25 1996 The Brand Page 23 Cowboys Jackets set for ASC showdown By Josh Bowerman Sports Editor Big! That is the only word that can describe this weekend's homecoming football game for the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys. The Cowboys will be looking to suc- cessfully kick off their American Soutahwcst Confrcnce schedule at the hands of Howard Payne University the team that dealt HSU its only loss of the season. The outcome of Saturday's game will have a major impact on the inaugural ASC race and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics playoff picture. Howard Payne enters the game ranked fourth in the NAIA poll joined in the top 10 by Hardin-Simmons at the No. 9 slot. The Cowboys enter this Saturday's contest riding a five-game winning streak with the last two victories coming over National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II foes. Page 2 The Brand November 7 1996 Willie's not so 'slick' when it comes to God Well we've gone and done it again "Slick" Willie Whitewater scan- dal the whole 9-yards for another four years. As you probably well know President Bill Clinton is back in the White House for another term of office. He's the-first Democratic President since Franklin Roosevelt to actually win a sec- ond term election I might add. Now I don't know how many of you are thrilled by this news of re-election but if you are I just have to say "YOU'RE IN THE WRONG PART OF THE COUNTRY!" Actually it was pretty safe to say that President Clinton had this 1996 elec- tion wrapped up from the get-go. I don't recall any previous election that I've seen where a candidate received more than half the electoral votes needed to win in less than two hours like Clinton did. November 7 1996 The Brand Page 3 Halloween faces a righteous 'Judgement' By Melissa Robinson Staff Writer Due to some derogatory events that have taken place in recent years Halloween is a holiday looked down upon by many people. It is still All Hallow's Eve a time where Christians rebuked Satan and his demons by dressing up similar to these demons and scaring them away with righteous- ness. However a recent trip to the House of Judgement reminded me that Halloween can be good today as well. A group of friends and I traveled to Garland to visit the House of Judgement. It is a ninety minute church- based haunted house sponsored by Freeman Heights Baptist Church that deals with today's public and moral issues heaven and hell. A cast member Terry Wright 19 described the house as "a modern representation of circumstances and choices we make on earth." This year's story was aptly named "Descent into Hell" and introduced us to Alicia Lane. In the begin- ning Alicia is in junior high and s...

Page 4 The Brand November 7 1996 Student congress gets students involved By Jake Long Staff Writer Around the campus of Hardin- Simmons University the efforts of the members of Student Congress have con- tinued to effect the students in different ways. The results from their meetings and work accomplished usually behind the scenes in itself benefit the students. The main objective of Student Congress is to serve as a liaison between the students and administration. During their meetings members of Student Congress discuss the needs of the students and create solutions to them. Then those ideas are taken before HSU's administra- tion to inform them about the concerns and interests of the student body. "Students Congress is in existence to serve the student body" exclaims Melissa Boler a member of student congress. According to Brad Butler president of Student Congress he views the organi- zation's role as "giving the students the ability to discuss and voice concerns to each other an...

November 7 1996 The Brand Page 5 li e t t e r & From Harlaxton Dear HSU Things on this side of the Atlantic arc going great! I have enjoyed travelling around the British Isles despite the weather and train strikes which I have encoun- tered. I think my most memorable trip has been my trip up to Scotland. We hiked up Ben Nevis and around Glen Nevis and tried to get over to the island of Iona But unfortunately due to a train strike and a ferry leaving a couple of minutes early all we were able to do was gaze at the island from the shores of Mull under the pouring rain. Despite all the minor setbacks the trip was still an adventure! The food alone is different enough over here. Despite the manor's weak attempt at preparing English food I have had some good meals. (Some of the food they give us actually makes the Cafe's food look good!) Indian food is pretty popular over here but my favorite meal has been haggis and fried Mars bars up in Scotland. (Don't ask what haggis is!) Other t...

Bryan said that she was shocked to hear her name announced as the recipient of this year's crown but she said she heard more than the announcer's voice. "The second they said it" remembered Bryan "it was like I heard God saying 'You know I can't be there to accept this award. Will you go get it for me?'" Bryan empha- sized the fact that the crown is "all God's" and that she is just holding onto it until she can lay it at His feet. In Bryan's opinion the crown is not a trophy won by her own merit. "It's everyone's who is in my life" she said "everyone who's given me their smiles and howev- er else they've helped me." November 7 1996 The Brand Page 9 Neeson gives Oscar-worthy performance as Irish hero By Chris Hatcher Editor in Chief Liam Nccson knows just how to set a cinematic revolution in motion. Best revered for his German "sav- ior" in the holocaust epic Schindlcr's List and kill-bearing Scottish hero of last year's Rob Roy the Irishman has a way of filling big shoes where plots of war-for-frccdom's-sakc are concerned. Writer-director Neil Jordan's Irish bloodbath Michael Collins is no excep- tion so it's only fitting that Nccson play the lead as a swashbuckling swift-talking Irish rebel of an early 20lh century cause. It will also prove fitting when Nccson takes this year's best actor award for the true-talc performance; he's absolutely brilliant once again. Actually Nccson may be the only thing holding Jordan's violent talc of Irish-British rivalry historically account- able. That and the fact that no expense was spared in creating the film's realistic aura from its Irish accents to explo...

This newest and loudest version of the great love story is trendy in some ways trashy in most others. Quietly cursing my luck I shook myself out of my self-induced stupor and stag- gered to the door. As I jerked it open I was shocked to hear a boisterous "TRICK OR TREAT!" I quickly surveyed the situation. There on my doorstep holding a garbage sack half-full of candy under my nose dressed up as a prison inmate was the near invincible El Guapo. It was a question I'd asked him a hundred times before but it came out before I could stop myself. "What in the world are you doing?" "Where arc you from boy Antarctica? I'm trick-or-trcating."
