Local and General. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 7 November 1917

Local and General. Ouyen has a poundkeeper again, and people will appreciate the fact. At the council meeting on Thurs day, Mr. S. Grace was appointed to fill the position temporarily, and applications are called for the posi tion permanently. There is plenty of work in view. An unfortunate fire occurred at Cowangie 'n Monday week. Mr. A. Tuckett. auctioneer, was fixing a new cylinder in his motor car and a spell was taken before completing the work. While those engaged were absent from the place a fire broke out, and in a few minutes the office and car were nothing but ruins. The building was well cov ered, but the insurance.on the car was well belos. Still, Mr. Tuc kett keeps going, and hopes to overcome the set back. Some people when they want timber for fencing or buildings do not care where they get it s long as they do get it. As a consequence, fine trees on roads are cut down and the rubbis...

Starting at S o'clock to-morrow moraiug, the electors of Swan Hill and various parts of the State will be ealled on to choose a man to repre .sen them in tihe Legislative Assembly for the next three years. it is an important event--much more so than eopute think. It is a crit;irs! time for the taxpayer, for on his shoulders rest the responsibility oi baying who is to have the manage men:- of his nffairs and deciding howl best the eihip of State can be navi ated with the minimum of cost and she mtximumo of bone ; to the own';er Swau Hill electors have the choice of three men. They are the Hon. John Gray, who has held the seat for the past 12 or 13 years. His actions are well known to the majority of the electors, and they have to say whether those actions bave met with their approval. Unless the memories of a" lot are bhoit. we can guess uretty shrewdly whbte his name will appear on the first fount. Next (we are taking the azames aiphabetically) is...
