Billiards in England. CHAMPION PYRAMID MATCH. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 2 January 1875

Billiards in England. Champion Pyramid Match. On the 24th July a match tor the championship at pyramids was played at the Guildhall Tavern, Gresham street. The playcis were Cook, the champion billiard player, and John Roberts, jun. ; the game was the best out of 21 games, and the prize was £100 and a very handsome silver-gilt shield in relief, worth £ 120, manufac- tured by Messrs. Elkington, and pre- sented by Messrs. Burrotighcs and Watts. The attendance was not very large-a fact, however, which, considering the atmosphere of the room, was not to be deplored much by the spectators. As usual on all such occasions, the utmost order and quiet was maintained, and all betting -such, at least, as look an audible form-was strictly prohibited. The players have met before, but never, as last night, on level terms, Roberts on all occasions having given odds to Coo',. The latter having gained whit- may be called a world-wide reputation tor the excellence of his winning hazards, might have be...

Sugar Growing. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 2 January 1875

öugar Growing. Two or three years ago strangers visiting Port Darwin wero taken to fho Government Garden and shown the lino sugar cane that was growing there, whilst they wero also informed bow easy it would bo to extend the cultivation and mako it pay. But since that timo thero has boon no progress. In fact thero has been a considerable falling off, and now, probably, it would bo impossible to get a good specimen of sugar cane in this stttlemont ; for privatu residents have not interested themselves in tho matter, and tho Government seem to have con- fined their horticultural energies chief y to bananas, sweet potatoes, pineapples, and a few other things which " como in useful " for domestic purposes. Sugar-growing, however, is making rapid progress in Queensland The estimate of tho last season's yield is 14,000 tons-seven or eight thousand tons having been made by the beginning of October last. The Overland Telegraph. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 2 January 1875

he Overland Telegraph. TO THX KD1TOB. 3ir-I see by your last week's paper that Mr. Patterson is very anxious that he should not be deprived .of what credit is due to him for the successful construction of the Tele- graph Lit;e. What he states is no doubt true to a certaiu extent ; for ho certainly deserved some credit for advocating the landing of the tele- graph plant, stock, &c, at the Honor ia preference to Port Darwin ; hut unfortunately his advice was not acted upon m tue first case. How- ever, I'think it would have looked better ou his part if he had not been so backward in acknowledging the assistance he himself derived from the opportune arrival of Mr. Milner and party at the Roper at a time when himself and the telegraph party were in a bad fix for want of provisions and horses. I think that the success .of the Telegraph Line was almost as much owing to that event as the arrival of the steamer Omeo. It is not to be wondered at that the Government have iguored Mil- n...

COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE. STAPLETON. (From a Correspondent.) December 26. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 2 January 1875

COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE. STAPLETON. (From« Correspondent.) December 26. This is Boxing Bay; but our population here is hardly of that character to support the general tradesman, and consequently we have nu Christmas box hunters. At about 9 a.m. to-day we were sainted by the shrill sound of what, under the walis of a garrisoned town at home, we should consider one of the first attempts of a fifer boy trying to produce the note D. But knowing that there was in the hands of Mr. Edgar, the engineer who has been employed by the Virginia Company to transfer their machinery from Daylesford, in Victoria, to this place, a first-class pair of portable engines by the world-famed firm of Clayton, Shuttleworth, & Co., we were not at a loss to understand that the whistle was giving notice that the kettle was "sVboiling," aud that the great and mighty power of .' steam made plain " (until brought within the ken of all ¡'nun The agricultural laborer to the astute mining manager) would be rea...
