ON ACCOUNT. A case of attempted bribery in a Western Court is thus recorded : — A lawyer was called upon to de fend h man accused of petty larceny. The evidence against the prisoner was overwhelming, the unscrupulous lawyer ''determined, upon extreme measures. As he entered the court he slipped a '? twenty dollar gold piece into the justice's hand, and gave him a knowing look. The justice said no thing, hut pulled opi-Mi a dr.' weiy. and dropped tin: cdiii into it. The ease came on and the proof of the man's guilt was brought- out. The sentence of liadalyski was commuted to ten years' penal servitude, and the sentence of Tod to six years.
