FIRE AT STANLEY. The Enquiry. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 1 April 1891

FIRE AT STANLEY. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The Enquiry. A coroner's enquiry was held to-day, be- fore Mr. G. Anderson, S.M.., touching the late fire at Stanley on the morning of Tuesday, March 24, by which the building occupied by Mr. W. Jones, together with the stock in the store, were completely destroyed. Volu- minous evidence was taken, but there was very little to throw any light on the mys terious origin of the fire. The evidence of John Jones showed that his father rented the building as a general store from the owner, Mr. Alfred Smith ; the building was not insured, but the stock was insured in the Derwent and Tamar office ; he did not know for what amount, but he be- lieved about one fourth its value. Stock had been taken recently, showing value at the time of £1400. C. A. Stackhouse proved that he was near the store at a quarter' to 12 on the night of the fire ; there were at that time no signs of fire. E. A. Murray, the manager of the store, proved that on the night o...
