INQUEST AT DARLINGFORD. On Saurday last the coroner, Dr Rowe, held an inquest at Darlingford on the body of Vincent Martin, who was drowned recently in the Goulburn. The following evidence   was adduced:-     Benjamin Martin deposed-I am a labourer, and reside at Peppin's crossing, Goulburn River. I am the deceased's son. I last saw my father at Mr M'Mahon's, at the Goulburn on the 6th of October, about 8- o'clok in the morning. He stayed about half an hour,   and went towards his home, which is at Peppin's crossing. He was then perfectly   sober, and, to all appearance in good healh. I never saw him again alive. The deceased was 73 years old. he was a healthy man and not subject to fits. He was usually occupied in carrying travellers across the Goulburn in his own boat, It is capable of carrying two tons of goods, and was sound and in good order. MANSFIELD POLICE COURT. Saturday, October 29. "   (Before Dr. Rowe.)   John Lockil v. John Hardy.--In this case the com plainant stated that he had paid for a summons against the defendant for £9 8s 8d wages, which he had directed should be served by the police. Sergeant Lynas informed His Worship that the   summons had never come into the hands of the police. His Worship directed that a fresh summons should issue free of expense. Ann Trueman v. Isabella Nash- For using insulting language. The defendant was not in attendance.   Dr Rowe said the very bad state of the weather might have prevented her attendance, and directed a fresh summons to issue for Saturday, 5th November. (Mr Kitchen here took his seat on the bench.) Withers and Withers v. Simon Fraser- For £6 18s. 7d, goods sold. The summons was made returnable on 22nd inst, but the case did not appear to have been heard that day, and a fresh summous was directed to be issued. ...

Sir,-In' your report of the mooting of the IlBoailla Shire-Council held on the 2nd inst., Councillor Simlon Isnmado tosay that the Govern. meat engineer is an ass, and that the Shire enginooer is an ass, and incompetent to carry out aiy works required. With regard to the Government engineer, it is well known that he stands at the very top of his profession, nod did so before leaving, England, both as a highly-educated and practical civil engineer. With respect to myself, I may say that the works sent to the ofice of Roads sad Bridges hy me have not only been approved, but I have been complimented for their soundness and economy in design.
