BRISBANE SHOW. PRIZE SCHEDULE FOR THIS YEAR. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 8 June 1917

BRISBANE SHOW. PRIZE SCHEDULE FOR THIS YEAR. The 1917 prize schedule of the National Association, which has just reached us, provides interesting reading. We note that the prize-money has been increased by nearly £600, about £200 of .this amount going to the horse section. A number of new events have been provided for jumpers and hunters, and in addition to the handsome silver cup presented by his Excellency the Governor-iGeneral, £20 has been added as prize awards for the blood stallion best adapted for getting remounts. For the blood stallion best adapted for improving racing stock the prize-money amounts to £35. In the beef and dairy cattle sections very handsome prizes have been allo cated. The farm produce section will this year be one of the most attractive ever submitted to Queensland farmers, and should be responsible for a magnifi cent show of produce. Something like 30 classes, representing obsolete species of produce, have been omitted, and are replaced with 59 modern cla...

The Rejects. PROPOSED NEW BADGE. WHAT IS THE USE? [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 8 June 1917

The Rejects. PROPOSED NEW BADGE. WHAT IS THE USE? At a recruiting conference held last week in connection with the new recruit ing organisation it was recommended that the Federal Government be re quested to place a prohibition on all sporting fixtures which attract eligible men, .such as horseracing, football, and particularly boxing contests, and that if that step cannot be taken every ap parently eligible man should be com pelled to produce a certificate of dis charge from the A.I.F. or a rejection badge to secure admission to these gatherings. There was a strong expres sion of opinion that if rejects in the early days of volunteering were now re examined a large percentage would be found fit. The following motion was agreed to unanimously: — 'That this con ference strongly urges the Defence De partment to arrange for a new badge for rejected volunteers to come into force forthwith; that all previous badges be cancelled, and that the holders present themselves fQr re-examination ...

The Editor's Dugout. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 8 June 1917

The Editor's Dugout. The political unionists are particularly fond of asserting that they have no ill will towards returned soldiers. The 'Standard' last week, in a leader on the Sunnybank settlement scheme, has this to say: 'Despite the atrocious libels of Tory partisans and press, the attitude of workers towards our returned soldiers — the men 'who have been face to face 'with death for our common cause — is that of the utmost goodwill.' Sounds very plea sant, but is it true? If the worker of the unionist branc^ is favorably disposed to wards the returned soldier, why did the 'Standard' use every unfair ''means to try and beat Senator Foil and Lieut.jCol. Plane? Why did the unionists of Mt. Morgan, through the Arbitration Court, try to force on the returned soldier the obligation to join a union if lie wanted preference? Why have the unions been foremost in the fight against conscription, the only equitable and sane method of reinforcing ? the boys at the front? The political unio...

Returned Soldiers & Patriots' National Political League. ITS WORK AND OBJECTS. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 8 June 1917

Returned Soldiers & Patriots' National Political League. ITS WORK AND OBJECTS. The official daily organ of the Trades Hall party has a penchant for abusing ?anything which does not come within the four corners of the Labor platform. When the Returned Soldiers and Patriots' National Political . League was estab lished it said nothing; the organisation was in. its swaddling clothes, and looked weak. But when it began to grow in numbers and in political influence — and ?anyone with, commonsense might have, known it would — the Trades Hall began to sit up.and^ take notice. Long before the recent Federal campaign — in fact, shortly after the referendum campaign — it became apparent to the Trades Hall crowd that the R.S. and P.N.P. League was going to be a thorn in the side of the extreme section of labor. Then be gan the campaign of abuse and libel against the returned soldiers - who dared to form an organisation with political p'ower as its avowed objective. It is com mon knowle...

Labor and the War. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 8 June 1917

Labor and the War. The real attitude of the Trades Hall party towards the decision of the people to help win the war is disclosed in a significant statement made early in the week by Mr. E. J. Holloway (president of the Central Executive of the Victorian Political Labor Council). Mr. Holloway evidently echoed what is in the minds of the majority of union officials when he said: 'Conscription is not dead, and I have some reason for saying what I am going to say. The liberty that the workers in Australia enjoy can only be maintained by eternal . vigilance, and I warn the workers to be ready to oppose the conscription of life and labor at a moment's notice. If conscription of labor comes next week or the week after, be ready to oppose it, if necessary by drastic means. It may come as a bolt from the blue. If it does, be ready for it.' To oppose the conscription of labor by drastic means can signify only one thing, and that is the use of the general strike, or, worse, the use of armed f...

The Way of the War. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 8 June 1917

The Way of the War. The most interesting feature of the week's news, apart from the Russian situation, is the growing strength of the measures taken by the Admiralty against the submarine blockade. The frightful ness campaign, inaugurated with the dual object of keeping up the spirits of the German people and starving Great Britain, has been somewhat of a failure, for though the Huns are regaled with lurid stories of a Britain in extremis, there are no signs forthcoming that the British people are up against it. On the other hand, signs are not wanting that the mission of the submarine fleet — to destroy every possible ton of British and neutral shipping — is fast becoming a failure. The tonnage in British ships lost up to September 30 last totalled 2,250,000, and in December, January, and February we lost 1,200,000. Since then the monthly totals have been steadily declining, while the number eft Unboats have been increasing. During (the week ended June 1, only 21 ships were sunk by...
