The King's Jockey. Thn news thai Danny Maher, the American jockey, will ride the. horses owned by King Edward VII. of England next .season at a salary said to be 25,000dol. (£5000), the highest retaining fee ever paid a rider on either side of tho Atlantic, was no surprise to well-informed turfmen in America. Maher hai always been popular on the English turf, and is quite a favorite with the Duke of Devonshire, in whose name the Kinj races his horses while he is in mourn ing. Maher is 19 years old. He is of slight physique, but rather tall for a jockey. Lifco the great English rider, the late Fred Arohor, he has long limbs.
