What Sates Wanted To Know M I shall be obliged if you can answer me one question,' said my friend Bates, as he lay on the couch one day iu my room nursing his aching leg. ' Why does exposure to wet or cold bring on an attach of rheumatism at one time, when a like exposure for a score of times lead to no such result?' Before I set down in writing the answer I g^ve him I wish you would read the following letters, as no doubt the authors of them will be interested in the same point. ' In November, 1892,' says the one, 11 1 had an : attack of rheumatic fev«Jr, and was confined to my - bed for four weeks, during which time I suffered j fearfully. I had awful pains all over me ; my ' joints swelled up, and I was so helpless I could , not raise my haud to my. mouth. After the fever | left me I was extremely weak, and so emaciated I was little more than skin and bone. A large lump, the size of an egg, formed on my elbow, and1 my fingers were almost drawn out of joint. I cannot describe the ...

After trying- many different kinds of fml for a bee-smoker, I find corn ooba, cut due, ? . the best to use, when taking away surp'us - (aays a writer in an Araeiican paper)- F«»p - ; - all other purposes I Kite buckwheat olnff! the best. A tin strainer is uewdeil wh^n' chaff is used, to keep the chaff from blow ing: oaf. The only objection to using chaff when taking surplus, is in soiling the honey. Possibly a fine straiuer vfould prevent. this. The coarser part of the chsff is best. It . is surprising to see how well chaff holda lire and the length of time it will burn. Mark Twain Again. Thkkjs are few prominent Americans more favourably known in Australia than 1 Mark Twain,' the humorist. He was once credited with a truism which fairly illustrates the keenness of perception and soundness of thought which gleam brightly' through and characterise his quaint dictio , He is reported as saying ' There is no use filling the upper story of a youth with scientific knowledge unless he has a fair stock of common sense on the ground floor.' Good oid-faehioncd common sense was what Mr. Hugh Barnett, a retired Govern ment servant, of Roma, Queensland, exercised when he took advantage of his friends' and neighbours' experience and chose a remedy for indigestion and liver troubles which had cured them. His ex perience justified that decision, and is worthy of thoughtful consideration. He writeB : — ' From ! personal experience with Warner's Safe Cure I have »o hesitation in advising persons suffering from liver diseases to take it in preference to all other reme...

Shooter's Hill [Newspaper Article] — Camden News — 4 June 1896

Shooter's Hill, ?????-. f From our own Correspondent.]] The weather toure is very unsettled with warm days and cold nights. Snow has recently fallen. The district around consists of auriferous soil at different depths. The unselected parts of country 'is chiefly bush land, thickly studded with a i-ind of soft gum tree which is very undurable, and is also thick with under scrub, known as . ? hop scrub, which ; \ the. cattle are very fond of and upon which they principally live in times of snow. The stock within this district are in fair ' ? condition. considei'ing the scarcity of grass, - Lovers of the gun find ample scope in ilie district, as wallabys, fand 5il'ds of every description are numerous, also dingos, and wombats, the oppossums are much prized for their beautiful skip and fur, which is eagerly sought after. This district for scenery and also for the -' sport which abound, together with the climate is well worthy of a visit by ai;y ,? citizen. ?

Why do some Farmers grow Rich? [Newspaper Article] — Camden News — 4 June 1896

Why do some Farmers -grow Eich? There is a good story told of two farmers in America. ?' These two farmers -& couple of years ago were ploughing in adjoining fields. As they turned the line fence they engaged in conversation. One drove a sleek, fat, spirited team, the other a pair of veritable horse frames. After some talk the latter proposed to trade horses, which was fina done, the owner of the poor team payin ~ 50dol, to boot, and the horses were exchanged then and there. One year later the farmers again met. . The former owuer of the poor team again had a poor team on his hands, and was willing to pay 50dol to his neighbour to trade again for his former team, which were now sleek and fat.' This is, indeed, an answer to the query. Do we not see the same here every day? Of two pastoralists, the one has finely- cultivated grounds, the stock well fed and warmly housed, a nice homestead, and everything in I connection with his station shows that energy that is so essential to...

Bob's Range. [Newspaper Article] — Camden News — 4 June 1896

Bob's Range (From, our own Correspondent.) Rain is badly needed just now. For want of that needful commodity our grass and crops are far from appearing of verdant hue. TJp to now we have had no frost to hurt uein any way, and a little rain just at the present juncture would enable the grass to grow for a few days longer. The loss of the Receiving Post Office here is sever nly lelt. An effort will be made. when things improve, to have the office re established. A fancy fair, supper, &e., are to be held here during this month. Several ladies are preparing for the event, which will be duly advertised in your widely-circulated journal. Hares are beginning to get numerous again now that the cold weather has set in. .Some of the gardens in this locality have received visits from these swift- footed animals.
