SCRAPED-UP SCRAPS OF SCRUBBY SCRIBBLES. (Continued from our last.) [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 5 June 1878

SCRAPED-UP. SCRAPS OF SCRUBBY SCRIBBLES. Ilerwenisi oot. (Continsed from our oal .) To eounterbalance this, I commenced at the other end, and got another shiver off of the same length, leaving a very perceptible eminince in the middle, reminding me of the calf of my leg six hours after . a centipede had bitten it. ; : -I now slewed the block round, and commenced at the other end, having thumped and .twisted add coaxed till I got the instrument of torture about a foot down, inserted the fingers of .my left. hand; with what object I didn't exactly know, but Mr. C. had done it, and hadn't split a dozen shingles in half-a-dozen minutes by that means?" By a violent jerk, I now extricated the instrument, and the wood by another violent ~erk imprisoned mny hand, which it squeezed, I'll be bound, harder than ever my friend " Gitape" did " Hanni's." I smiled blandly,' and spoke Anglo-American very fluently, while I inserted the instrument again and again, and re leased my hand, which, by thi...

HORRIBLE CASE OF BURNING AT SANDHURST. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 5 June 1878

HORRIBLE CASE OF BURNING AT SANDHURST. As Constables Fox and Cantwell were on duty in Hargreaves street about one o'clock on Sunday morning (says the Bendigo Ad- vertiser), near the Rose of Australia, at the corner of Bernal street, they observed flames proceeding from the back room of a house adjoining the hotel. They entered the premises, and finding the door of the second room locked, burst it open, when they found a lamp burning on the table, and were horrified to see a woman lying on the floor in a mass of flames, and part of the ceiling and the mantleshelf were also burned. The flames were all speedily extinguished and Dr. Cruikshank sent for, but previous to his arrival, as a cab was coming by, it was pressed into service by the constables, and as the poor creature's clothes were all burned to tinder, she was wrapped in a sheet and blanket and taken to the hospital, when, upon being taken to the operating room, the whole of the skin from the forehead down to her ankles, was f...
