'ALL IS VANITY' . . . saith the Preacher, And the preacher- is right, althongh he did'nt refer to Bicycles. There . is, however, a vanity which everyone has in life— a proper desire to out shine his fellows— to have ihe BEST TO BE GOT. In bicycles this is just as easy as possible. Few will dispute the fact that to-day, as in years past, it keeps up the enviable reputation of being the Best Bicycle in the World. BEHETT AID WOOD, Ltd., 39? George-street, Sole Agents.

THE EMPEROR'S CARDS, The German Emperor possessess a singular and unique pack of playing cards, and, what is more, he always uses it. The court cards represent portraits of reigning sovreigns selected by his Majesty. The queen of hearts, it is flattering to record, is Queen Victoria, the Queen of Italy figures as the queen of diamonds, and the Empresses of Russia and Austria are respectively the queens of spades and clubs. The Pope, oddly enough, is the king of spades, and the King of Italy his majesty of clubs ; Leopold II of oji.igiuiu la luc auvcicigu ui uicuuuuua, cum, WILII fairly becoming modesty, the Emperor William himself is the king of hearts. The Empress Augusta, it will be noticed, is not in the collection. The princi pal Premiers of Europe will be flattered to know that they are the knaves in this original pack, and in the centre of each ace is the presentment of some famous actress. The Emperor owns the original plates and copies are naturally not issued to the public....

A Romance in Real Life. The English mail delivered on 'Wednesday brought particulars to Sydney of an application to the Consul- G-eneral for G-reat Britain, stationed at Berlin, Germany, in reference to an estate of over £3,000,000 (three millions) sterling. An officer of the G-reat Synagogue, Sydney, is amongst the expectant legatees. The brief facts of the case are, that a wealthy banker died unmarried and left to his brothers and sisters his entire estate, a famous German pass out of the direct line of secession in the family. The peculiar codicils in the will are that marriage out of the faith disinherits ; that not any money shall be spent in law ; and the first charge on the estate shall be the mainten ance, support and extension of the world famous Breslau ' Erenkelsha Ansthalt' until such time as the executors named in the will shall deem the Institution self- supporting. A claimant, at the time a prominent Rabbi in Austrava, Germany, went to law to oust the trustees and was...

JEWS IN THE RUSSIAN ARMY. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

JEWS IN THE RUSSIAN ARMY. The enemies of the Russian Jew says the ' Jewish World ' are ever ready to state that our co-religionists are only too eager to shirk their duties of citizenship, especially the military service incumbent upon all Russians. Time after time have these charges been denied, but are, nevertheless, persisted in, and even more vehemently asserted. The official figures for 1897. published by the Minis ter of the Interior, give the lie direct to the untruths Dr: A.Berliner, in Berlin, has been the recipient of a high honor from the King of Italy. 'His Majesty has conferred on this distinguished scholar the Grand Cross of the Order of the Italian Crown, in recognition of the great service he has rendered to science by his published researches into the history of the Jews in Rome.

AMERICA. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

AMERICA. Rabbi Myers delivered an interesting lecture at the Bush-street Temple on a Sunday evening before a large congregation, on 'The Trinity of Jewish Sanctuaries.-' In part he said : — ' Three kinds of sanctuaries have been and will remain in use among Jews as long as there are any Jews in the world. The twenty-fifth chapter of Exodus says : ' Let them build me a sanctuary that 1 may live therein.' A Jewish sage remarks that God creates a remedy before the disease. When the temple was destroyed about 1800 years ago, the Synagogue was already a place of worship for the Jews. The first of the Trinity is the Synagogue. In the past it was a home, a school, a place of worship, where he heard the word of the priest, found comfort and courage, and could breathe a spiritual existence. We have had no day we have no temples, only synagogues, the house of assembling, as translated from the Hebrew. ' The other sanctuary is the Jewish home, the main stay of Jewish character. Within it are t...

SOUTH AFRICA. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

SOUTH AFRICA. The Cape Town Jewish Association, a young body of whose formation the 'Jewish World' comspondent spoke of some time ago, is proving a decided success. Founded for the purpose of facilitating social inter course amongst the younger members of our com munity here, it is accomplishing this object with praise worthy energy. Premises have been rented for two nights a week for the purpose of a club, and there in teresting debates periodically take place, while at one of the most popular out-of-door resorts, the bon accord grounds, a series ot promenade concerts nas Deen or ganised. The last of these concerts was held last Wednesday, February 23rd, and proved the most successful of the series so far. The grounds were brilliantly illuminated, and the best military band, and the most prominent vocalists in the town were present. Altogether the function was a most enjoyable one. The committee of this active association are Dr. Harris, and Messrs. J. Ornstein, A. Leiberman, M. Co...

AROUND THE WORLD. Jews and Catholics. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

AROUND THE WORLD. ? + ? ? - ? Fpom our Exchanges. Jews and Catholics. . - -We note that a representative of the Catholic Herald -;-, hais interviewed the Chief Rabbi on the question of ? Roman Catholics and anti-Semitism. Dr. Adler was able to say — as we have already said — that the Jews have nothing to complain of as to the attitude of Kng . lish! Roman Catholics on this question. ' I have never,' said the Chief Rabbi, 'experienced anything but the ? greatest kindness from the members of the Catholic Church in this country.' With regard to Cardinal Vaughan, Dr. Adler added that he was quite sure from what he knew of him, that he would loilow in tne . footsteps of Cardinal Manning in regard to his sym pathy with the Jews. The attitude of English Catholics towards the Jews is a generous attitude, and it does not call, for explanation. The attitude of the Catholics of France and Germany is another thing.. Dr. Adler, asked whether he attributed the present persecution of ; \ the. Jews...

A Good Answer. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

A Good Answer. Recently a Jew travelled with an Austrian officer near Prague. The latter had several newspapers with him. The Jew politely asked him whether he would permit him to read one of his papers containing the latest news of Prague. ' Yes,' said the officer, ' you don't need to read the latest news. They are hanging Jews and dogs in Prague of late.' ' This is very good indeed,' said the Jew, ' that we both are not there at present, for we would not be safe to live.'

RULES OF CARVING. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

RULES OF CAEVING. Rule 1 — It is not good form to climb on to the table. There is no doubt a great temptation to this. When you are struggling with a duck and he wabbles over just as you think you have him, you forget yourself, the common plan is not to leap upon the table all at once. This is the more usual process : The carver begins to carve sitting. By and by he is on his feet, and his brow is contracted. His face approaches the fowl, as if Vip wanffH fn pnmiirfi within about everything except that the duck is reluctant to yield any of its portions. One of his feet climbs into his chair, and then the other. His knees are now resting against the table and, in his excitement, he, so to speak, flings him self upon the fowl. This brings us to. Rule 2. — Carving should not be made a matter of brute force. It ought from the outset to be kept in mind that you and the duck are not pitted against each other in mortal combat. Never wrestle with any dish whatever; in other words, keep your...

Complaint and Cure. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

Complaint and Cure. Many of the radical reform ministers are bitterly complaining of the lack of interest of the young people in their attendance at and matters pertaining to the synagogue, ' Why it is,' they inquire, ' that only old people and mourners attend divine service ? ' Other prominent reform rabbis are worrying over what re medies can be suggested to inspire renewed love in the young Jewish breast. Have not these founders of what they term Judaism , ? „ ^« ni.Ann/vo Ar\r*o mii nin fn r1p-sfrnv tVif- faith* vef*. they cry aloud amidst the ruins ? They have built up new edifices and created so-called reforms that are de rogatory to the traditions of our forefathers. In years gone by, the father taught ; the child imbib ed and followed. Anxiously, the lad, from his Bar Mitzvah day, craved the privileges of an attained man hood to worship his God as did his beloved parents in the synagogue. The Hebrew language was taught and engrafted upon memory retentive, and cherished as an...

THE MIGRATION TO THE KLONDYKE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

THE MIGRATION TO THE KLONDYKE. \ It took two and a half years from the first discovery of gold in California for the population of that territory to increase from 15,000 to 92,000. At least 100,000 prospectors will advance upon Dawson City - and its vicinity in the first six or seven months of 1893 — less than a vear from the time when the world first heard of the new gold sensation. The days of '49 and the great Ballarat rush two years later were peaceful compared to this. Another dramatic fact — this army of gold-hunters will expend for transportation aria sujjplies before the end of the year fully 00,000,000 doJ. — four times as much as the probable total output of gold. There can be do doubt (says the ' Jewish Chronicle,'} that the British Colonies have treated the Jews well. They removed Jewish disabilities long before the Par liament of the United Kingdom could be induced to do so. In the West Indies, Jewish disabilities disap peared before the beginning of the present century...
