The Chamber of Death. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 23 May 1894

The Chamber of Death. THIS Paris correspondent- of the Glas» gow HE it a Li) has been dwelling on the strange taste for the horrible and gruesome which at the present moment characterises the perform ances of cafe concerts in * the gay city.' The culminating point in this direction seems to have been reached at the cabaret just opened in the Boolevnrd Hoehechouart (an oater boulevard), which goes by the name of 1 Cabaret de la Mort.' The door is ornamented with a death's head and orossbones, and the visitor is somewhat taken aback to find himself in the presence of a number of ' croquemorte' (mutes), dressed pre cisely as they are for a funeral. These are the waiters, who are forbidden to smile, to talk cheerfully, or to accept any gral uity, and whoKc solemn faces, very HUgxestivo attire, lit up by a weird green light, and generally moni'nfa! aspect, casta chilly feeling upon one, in spite of the knowledge that all is assumed. Tables are represented by a number of coffins on trestl...

CLEMENT MURPHY, a young resi dent of this town, effected a gallant rescue from drowning on April 21 during the lata heavy fresh in the Castlereagh. It was a close shave. A very pleasing ceremony took place on Monday after noon to commemorate the above incident, when Mr. D. WYALONG. (Forbes GAZETTE.) [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 23 May 1894

WTALONG. (Forbes GAZETTE.) THE reports of fresh gold finds still come in, but I would advise people not to come to Wyalongyet. All the claims that are on gold keen improving, and I believe that Wyalong will be tlie Coolgardie of the south-west. I will not say how many duffer claims there are here; and I do not know how many there are on payable gold for certain-something like SO odd, I tliinlc, Mr. George, an old resident of Dubbo, has started a cordial factory here, and has a good show of doing well. Business places are going up in all directions, but I cannot see how they can all make a do of it, for tilings are cheaper hero than in Forbes. Soma steps are being taken towards the erection of a hospital here, which I think is a good idea. So far it has not been wanted, which speaks well for a new rush. No fever of any kind has made its appearance on the rush yet-nothing more serious than common colds. I think the malleo bush and the mia mia are good protection against fevers, as the...

QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY REVIEW. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 23 May 1894

QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY REVIEW. A REVIEW of the local military force will be hold to-morrow (Thursday) at noon. The volunteers and cadets will parade at 11 o'clock, and headed by the band, will march from the drill hall in Macquarie-street, to the cricket ground in the park, whore the usual custom of firing the Royal salute will he observed, after which Captain Soane will pat them, through the usual movements. On Queen's Birth day last year the same programme was gone through, but the movements were very much hampered by the public, who, instead of keeping outside the oval, mixed up with the volunteers and cadets, not alone spoiling the different movements, but obstructing the view of those who remained outside the en closure. It is to be hoped this will not occur again to-morrow. With regard to the matter of the Birthday Re view to be held in Sydney, and in which the. local company ex pected to take pari, Captain Soane has received a letter from Mr. J. Morgan, M.L.A., to the cffect that S...

THE GOLD-SEEKERS. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 23 May 1894

THE GOLD-SEEKERS. The gold-seeking furore has seized as hotly upon the inhabitants of those shores as it did forty-three years ago, and the eearoh for the metal ia as keen as could be wished. While aome good discoveries have been made, only a few finds of great moment have been comc upon, bat there is abundant promise that they will all redound to the benefit of Australia In tbe very heart of the depression men prayed tbat aome (rood field would break out so that men oould find employment and tho supply of money for circulation be inoreased. They have scarcely realised their prayer yet, but indications are pointing that gold ia going 10 be more plentiful for a time. Unluckily, beyond the beach-mining of tho north nothing lias yet bean come upon which can be described a* poor-man's ground, but if any thing like energetic development is proceeded with in the finds announced there will be a (neat demand for labour and that well remunerated supply we are all so anxious to see. As proof ...

THE EXPORT OF FROZEN MEAT. (TO THE EDITOR.) [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 23 May 1894

TEE EXPORT OF FROZEN MEAT. (To THE EDITOR.) SIR,-Mr. R. M. Pitt ?wrote last week giving the average price that Sydney frozen mutton has realised in London ; during the last 12 months. The result is not high certainly, but it is far better than we have or can now realise at Homebush, or by boiling down. Mr. Pitt also states that the Kerarbuiy sheep which netted 9s lid fresh from the shears, were an exceptionally good lot. Granted ; but surely as good sheep can be bred and fattened on the adjoining Murrumbidgoe stations, and the Macquarie, and Liverpool Plains, if chilling establishments were put up at, say Dubbo and Gunnedah. The Messrs. Campbell Brothers, of Bolarin gar, on the Macquarie, and the Namoi Pastoral Company, at Burburgato, on the Namoi, each netted 12s 6d per head for crossbred lambs this season. At the present time merino Sydney mutton is only quoted at 2Ad per lb.; calculating that it costs 2 34-100d per lb. to ship and sell it, it only loaves about 8d for the mutton, ...
