The elections for members of House of I?e preventatives and tho ijenato took place on Saturday last, and in a good number of instances tho contests were close und excit ing. Both parties worked bard to gain a majority, and a lot of rumors and reports, a3 usual, circulated to damage the prospects of the candidates. In Chiltcrn tho Labor party had a largo number of vehicles of all descrip tions and a motor car running about through out tho day bringing electors to tho polling booth, and must hava spent considerable timo in organising its vast forces. On the other hand Mr Ahern gave strict orders that no money was to be expended on his behalf, and not one vehicle was requisitioned.
