&Iqxandra & Rea gitandaqd PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. NEC TENERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26. 1909. The cutting 'offt, f two trains a week from Cathkin to Alexandra appears to be a very pialtry proceeding and one much commented upon by the travelling public. Mr Fl. Wood, acting shire secretary, informs us that the local council is in communication with the Commissioners and members of Parliament, pointing out the great inconvenience the stoppage had occasioned and at the same time drawing attention to the fact that the loss on the working of the line is guaranteed by residents. It was stated that an ample supply of firewood is easily available for stoking the engine, thus overcoming the difficulty existing owing to the scarcity of coal. It seems to us to be nothing short of an excuse this cry of shortness of cdal. Atone ttmea vast quantity of wood was used for steaming purposes on the rail ways, and it is a wonder that more wood and less coal is not now used on many ...

The Thornton Tram. In accordance with the decision arrived at at the adjourned meeting of the Alexandra Shire Council, on the 15th inst., a visit of inspection of the route of the iroposed Thornton tram way was made on Saturday last. Contract Shearing. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 26 November 1909

Contract Shearing. Shearing by contract is a system of getting one's clip' to market without any of the inconveniences and worry of having the shearing done on your own premises.. The.system in certain quarters has been in operation for some time, and it has been conducted with such success to sheep owners that it is rapidly extending, and it would appear as if in a very short period the whole clip of a district will receive attention and the whole of the sheep be shorn at one or two of the moat conveniently situated and properly equipped sheds. A sheep owner, under this system, has merely to drive his sheep to and from the shed and provide the necessary number of bales. Everything else is done for him-the shearing, the classing, the consigning and delivering of the wool. The price per 100 charged varies in certain dis tricts, and appears to range from £2 2s. to £2 10s. and £2 15s. We have 'been informed that in the Mansfield ai:ad other districts the charge is never less- than '£2 ...
