A HEROIC ARMY DOCTOR. [Newspaper Article] — Foster Mirror and South Gippsland Shire Advocate — 25 March 1915

A HEROIC ARMY DOCTOR. A pressman onco asked Winston Churchill what spectacle of courage In all his battle experiences had most moved his spirit. For answer, ho went back to a summer night in 1S97, when Fnglaiul was full of the glory nud the triumph of Queen Victoria's Dia Inland Jubilee. I On that night Mr. Churchill was | fighting in the wildest and most ter rible Himalayan hills. The enemy hud made a sudden and a ferocious attack upon the Malakand. One of tho bravest of our ollieers, Lieuten ant Ford, in leading a little rush was shot through the shoulder, and fell dangerously wounded. There was no moon, and it was pitch dark. An Army doctor—Surgeon Lieutenant Hugo—hearing of Ford's condition, instantly made his way to the swoon ing ollicer. No moon, no possibility of using lights, a deadly lire. Tho doctor did not hesitate, and groped about his body for the cause. It was too dark to see tho nature of tho wound. To strike a mutch would be to reveal Ills position to a watchful and ...

SPORT AND PASTIME. THE TURF. [Newspaper Article] — Foster Mirror and South Gippsland Shire Advocate — 25 March 1915

SPORT AND PASTIME. THE TURF. The Association races adver tised to take place on the Leon gatha course on Friday next, March 26th, and the patriotic meeting arranged for a date in April in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund, have been abandoned. The drought has made the price of horse feed so dear that owners in largo numbers in the city have no alternative but to turn their horses out and give up racing till the spring. As race clubs in the country where good stakes are given are dependent upon city horses it will be found necessary to cancel all arrangements till brighter conditions provail. The S.G. Racing Association, and the Leongatha Racing Club com mittee have therefore considered it advisable to abandon the meet ings for March 26th and early in April. Traquette, who is greatly fancied for the Doncasler Handi cap, started an odds on favorite in the Rawson Stakes ;.t Rosehill on Saturday. She ran a good race, and flattorcd her admirers until about 100 yards from home, when she was ...

"WHAT I THINK OF THE GERMAN NAVY." [Newspaper Article] — Foster Mirror and South Gippsland Shire Advocate — 25 March 1915

"WHAT I THINK OF THE GERMAN NAVY." Supposed to be Written by a Jack Tar. My disposition ain't nasty, I hope; I ain't given to think unpleasant tilings of people without causo, ami I ain't what you'd call a top-notcher at tongue fireworks. But il' I was to give you my real, unadulterated opin Ion o' the German Navy, the poor old Censor would cither have to pass a column or two o' regular cayenno sprinkled stuff, or do his work proper ly and bo posted up soon afterwards as bein' away on siclc lcavo with a bad attack o' pencil-elbow. It's nn insult to the name to call it a navy. My idea of a real navy is j something that'll do what it was built . for—fight—something that's eager to , face the music when tho music comes : along—something that'll chance its arm for glory, and If it should get a . wliackin' in the ctiancing, to finish up content and happy to know it's done its best and mado the country whose 'lag it flew prouder of it than ever, t That's my idea of a navy.
