THIS unfortunate n/mfcvas executed oil .Monday within the walls of the Mel bourne Gaol, in pursuance of a sentence passed upon him at the late Bcndigo Sessions for (lie murder of Agnes .U'Cnlluiii, a woman with whom lie had cohabited. This man appears to have led a respectable lift) up to the time when he committed the act for which lie has paid the forfcitof his life. About three years ago ho cainc to this country, and was soon followed by the woman whom he has since mur dered. They lived together for some time as man and wife, and Goruick was only prevented from marrying her by her ill conduct. :She drank to excess, and was otherwise unfaithful to him. Ill a fit of passion he rushed upon her, mid, in presence of several persons, he stabbed her. fche died of the wound, and the rest is known. THE news by the Challenge which arrived yesterday from Hong Kong, confirms as in our opinion that wc ni1) drifting into another Chinese war, as hostilities on a large scale were being waged lit the date of lu-r de parture. The same vessel wliich firings this intelligence brings also twenty Chinese passengers, and has left we know not how many hun dreds at Guichen Buy. While, there fore, JSngland is actually at war with Chin a, immigrants from that country are flocking to our shores, and our population is being increased in tlii» manner at least one thousand per week.
