WHAT COLOUR REALLY STANDS FOR Does It Mean More Now Than Usual [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 12 November 1930

WHAT COLOUR REALLY STANDS FOR Does It Mean More Now Than Usual . When we hear on every side that this is the age of colour, which by inference means that past ages were not, we naturally ask our selves what is meant by colour. The dictionary tells that it is 'a property or quality of visible phenomena, distinct from form and from light : and .shade, depending upon the effect of light of different wave lengths ? on the retina:' Al though such an involved explanation may be though such an involved explanation may be over the heads of. most of us, yet probably this is as near the truth as any other explanation is likely to be, if we think, it out. - In very ancient days colours had definite meanings, before the days of permanent' oil paints, and many of those meanings still ob tain. 'Black for mourning, white for -purity, purple for regal pomp, grey for sadness, red for revolution, and many others, . are still recognised. The question arises are these merely owing to old hereditary ass...

THE ATTRACTIONS OF COLOUR Good Colours May Help Bad Design [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 12 November 1930

THE ATTRACTIONS OF COLOUR - Good Colours May Help Bad Design While admitting .that beauty of form and colour are the necessary elements of success, _ y_et it will also be recognised that, though a poor outline may be made presentable by a judicious choice of colours, yet no perfections of form can be anything but a failure if the colours are crude and clashing, enough to dis turb our artistic equaginiitv. Some colours are more beautiful, and more rare and costly than others, , and therefore are seldom used, but luckily many beautiful pig-' ments are within the reach of most. Paint has two great spheres of usefulness — tirfiSPrva Hon and hf»a ntifirntirm ? dnrl nrpuprallv the first aspect overshadows everything else. But colours which harmonise are so attractive that tliey add much more than their cost to a building, in which case although the pre servative power of paint costs the money, the attractiveness of the colour schemes is so pro fitable by adding to. the sale value, that it...

CLEANING PAINT OFF STONE STEPS [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 12 November 1930

CLEANING PAINT OFF STONE STEPS J. G. L., Albury enquires as to the best method of cleaning the stone steps leading to ' the front door of an old-time mansion now undergoing renovation. Answer.— Apparently the steps were for many years periodically whitened, with white water colour, with a very little oil to -bind it, and that where the foot prints have worn this away the stone is now bare; but in other parts the coats of ' white are very thick. Probably the best method is to take a steel brush and vigorously apply to the dry surface all over, sweeping the white power away as . tw ; *ww»jv«g,.'V.;u vynuaaj ?' niv; VVllUt Will cUillUdl entirely disappear without; changing the face of the stone. If this is found too laborious, the same method using water may save trouble, but the top step must be washed and finished first, and so on until, the bottom one is reached, as the white liquid will form streaks on the bare stone., Another method is to use a solution of muriatic acid, very weak...

THE PAINTERS' PAGE MORALITY IN HOUSE PAINTING A Two or Three Coat System [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 12 November 1930

THE PAINTERS' page MORALITY IN HOUSE PAINTING A Two or Three Coat System ? With most of us house painting is a part of. the building industry and nothing more, but looked at from a, wider angle, it may mean a lot more. lAt the 'C011ycnti0.11 of Master Painters and Decorators of Pennsylvania in U.S.A., one of the delegates Mr. R. L. Hallett of the National Lead Co. of .New ' York, in speaking of 'the future of the 'great industry' spoke of the evijs ctf speculative building as it affected painters' work. He reckoned that' about ' £100,000,000 was spent each: year in,. U.S.A. on painters' work, which -would never be continued unless it were generally appreciat ed that a trreat deal imnrp. than this tas. added by so doing to the value of the prop erty thus attended to. The Great War stopped both building and painting. After the war was finished, a great; deal of cheap building was undertaken with fewer coats of paint to make .. the building saleable at a low ^cost. When business slowed...
