Funeral of the Hon. John Fairfax THE funeral of the late Hon John Fairfax took place to-day, and was very largely attended, among those who took part in the mournful ceremony being many of the leading colonists of New South Wales. The remains, of the deceased gentleman were   taken to the Congregational Church, Pitt street, yesterday, and the funeral proceedings commenced this afternoon, at two o'clock, when a service was held in the church,   conducted by the Rev. Mr. Jeffries. The building was well filled with mourners. At the conclusion of' the service, a procession was formed, and the cortege moved to the mortuary-station, at Redfern, from whence a special funeral train was to start at 3 o'clock for the cemetery at Haslem's Creek. A Lesson for Young Ladies. A CHICAGO journal, in an article on the health of English girls, says :- " All foreign   travellers have remarked upon the superior robustness and health of the English women. An idea of the causes which produce this may be gained from the following account of the habits and dress and exercises of the daughters of the English Minister Thornton at Washington. They dress with the greatest plainness, their abundant light hair braided and tied with ribbons, their dresses, rather short and free from unatural expansion, and their shoes, which are not at all diminutive, have soles thicker than any American shoemaker would dare to make. The miles that they walk, ride, or pull on the river, are an unfailing source of astonishment to young ladies whose miles are danced out on waxed floors.
