VOL. _XV_. STATE COLLEGE , PA., NOVEMBER , _i ~~ , 1890. No. 4. _Entered at State Colle_,qe Post Qif ice as second class matter, OWING to an oversight’ the numbers on the May and September issues were incorrect. Number one of volume four began wi th the May issue ; hence the September issue should have been number two instead of number three, (the June issue having been omitted) . The October and November issues are respectively n ~ tmber ~ _tl ~ ree and four. IT is with deep sorrow that we an nounce the death of Geo. R. Johnson , a former member of ‘ 91. Mr. Johnson was known among us as a gentleman of high Christian character , who had no enemies, who showed pre-emi _. nentl y that his aim was to please all with whom he came in contact. When one yeai ~ ago he was compelled by circumstances to engage in business, and to discontinue his college work , his classmates and friends felt that they had lost a companion whose place could not easily be filled. Now the thought comes forcibl ...

save the college and merchants of the town an immense amount of expense incurred by the hauling of frei ght , coal etc. Also, as there will be onl y a small demand for a station where the present one is, the passenger trains can be run in to the college regularl y, thus making it very convenient for those going to or via. _Bellefonte, who now have to take the hack via. Lemont. This is an advance in the ri ght _d irection , and when comp leted , will be one of the most useful of our many improvements which are now progressing _rapid ly. N old ad age says that it is a poor Atime to lock the stable after the horse has been stolen, Fortunatel y this does not exactl y apply to us in speaking of the recent fire which broke out in the main college building, for it was discovered just in time to prevent its becoming of destructive proportions. Some things however oug h t to so pre sen t themsel ves to us , that we will take precautio n against all possible danger by fire. In the first place...

technical instit ution needs. Recentl y the library was carefull y catalogued according to the Dewey or I)ecimal system , which gives entire satisfaction. The rooms occupied _! are large and in connection with the _read ing room we have facilities of which we cannot comp lain , as our want s are am ply supplied. IT ~ pleasing to note th e i nterest which is being taken in the Y. M. C. A. For at least a year , th e wor k had rather retrogradled than p rogressed; but now an interest seems to be springing up which shall work for good. The association owes much to the efforts of Mr. S. M. Say fordi , who spent several days here recentl y in good procluctive work. That gentleman is so well known that it is needless to say that many were ledi to take a diecisive stand for the ri ght throug h his _pers _~ la—sive influence , andi have joined! the association. refused "barbarians " citizenshi p for many centuries. History gives you more examples. A dam has been placed in the progress of the black race of these United States, by the success(ul attempt of either prohibiting him from voting, or by having his vote onl y partiall y counted. Now a stream may pass a dam in three ways : It may run around the dam ; it may run over the dam ; or it may un dermine the dam. The black race is going to do one of these three in a few years. Which shall it be? Shall a ditch be cut around the dam by legislation and let this human stream flow quietl y on to political liberty? or shall we keep building our dam hi gher, until the race becomes numerous enough to either run over the dam and and hold it down , or until it murderously digs at its foundations , and suddenl y carries it to destruction ? Thoughtful men in Congress have tried to avert the two latter evils by digging on the ditch ; bold and reckless men are working on the clam ; thoughtless men are st...
