Experience in Growing Calves by Hand . [Newspaper Article] — Wallace's Farmer — 8 April 1898

Experience in Growing Calves by Hand . D . C . Morey , of Pocahontas county , Iowa : Our calves come in December and January . We set the milk in crocks and commence feeding skimmilk when the calves are a week or ten days old , at the rate of four quarts at a feed , twice a day . In a very short time they will eat a little hay , and at three weeks old will eat a little shelled ¦ corn . When they get to eating corn well , we feed all they will eat We turn them on grass in May , but keep up the grain . We then wean , send the milk to the creamery , and ¦ have the separator milk for the pigs . By fall the calves weigh 500 pounds . C . H . Wright , of Story county , Iowa : I have raised a good many calves by hand and am glad these questions are being answered through your valuable paper . We all get new ideas as to stock raising and farming in general . I feed separator milk and balance the ration with corn , oats , and oil meal ground together , and feed dry . I feed the milk warm and ...

A Desirable Road Law . [Newspaper Article] — Wallace's Farmer — 8 April 1898

A Desirable Road Law . fDjhtuar r __ H ____ : In your lwrae of March Uth you give the synopsis of a bill now pending in the Legislature on the subject of working highways . So far as stated by you , I do not see any material change this bill , if it became a law , would make with our present law . As it now reads , any township may by its trustees adopt the township system and let the working of the highways to the lowest bidder . In your issue of March _ iath , J . j .. Walker advocates the road district system of our forefathers . As well might a man advocate stage coaches tor travel nowadays . That system of working roads is as lar beiund the times as a tallow dip is behind electric lights . When he Bays There is too much seilishness in mankind generally , he sounds the keynote to the objection to the township system . With one superintendent and ail road work let by contract and ail road taxes payable in cash as much labor can be done with a two-null tax as tour mills under the ...

. Good Roads . [Newspaper Article] — Wallace's Farmer — 8 April 1898

. Good Roads . ID WAI _ I . _ H . BB j . iKaaat In your issue of March 25 th I noticed a little critcism on the farmer as a road worker . I urged in my last that tanners be allowed to work where they are interested ; the supervisor is to uiame u he does not get the work out oi them , if a tanner does not know now to work roads he does not know now to _ arn _ . The wont on roads buoiuu De done just as neatly as tne worn un the larni . If a tanner suould continue to piow the back iurrow repeiueoiy ana mush in the same dead iurrow ne would soon have a high nugu ana a deep furrow , and this is tuts most enlcient way to form a road giaue , tne aeaa turrow conducting tne tvaier away . To get the water away ( iiuciiiy is one ot tne main problems ot IUUU working . When a supervisor nauis out m a slusher ironi ten to unity rous he is wasting public money ; no man can put in a aay s wont with a siuaner traveling over thirty feet . 10 mane good roads , strike a center line aud piow up to that ...

A ° Water System on " -the Farm . While ol readers [Newspaper Article] — Wallace's Farmer — 15 April 1898

A ° Water System on -the Farm . While ol readers a great many our are so situated that it is not advisable lor them to go to any great expense in establishing water systems , some in fact being renters having no control over the improvements , others having a limited amount ol stock and reasonably good wells , nevertheless no stock larm is properly fitted out unless it has a water system which will avoid the WJ 2 * W One of die bulls at the head of C . C . Bigler s Short-hern herd , Hartwlck , Iowa . VJwV labor of hand-pumping and will furnish an automatic supply ot fresh , pure water available at the will of any animal on the farm throughout the entire year . It may seem a little unseasonable to talk about it Just now , but we find from experience that good things have to be talked about some time in advance , and there is no time in the year in which pure water and plenty of it Is not required on the farm , and there is usually a greater loss from the want ol it than would pay two...
