WM gtotxfo Written for The Western Rural . Wives and Husbands--Views of Sis . G . H . Adams . O , Jennie T ., v ? hat have you done ? Set the farmers wives , maidens , and junior fanners who read THE WEBTBBJI RUBAL throughout the West , all in a flatter , with a few strokes of your ready pen I What did you write r I have really forgotten the exact words yon nsed . I have been working so hard through harvest , cooking for the hungry men , besides renovating the black , sweaty shirts , shed each night . I did not do this because my husband was too stingy to hire it done , nor to save the dollar , but because my wash-woman was at work in tbe harvest field , and conld not come , indade she could not ma am . As I was saying , because of all this hard work , I have ho time left for hunting over the papers to find out what all the lusa is about , but I believe you scolded because farmers put themselves before their wives , *• and their sons before the daughters . TBE APIARY [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 22 August 1868

TBE APIARY Bee Feeding . I do not nse a feeder , neither do I feed bees , except in tbe Spring , to promote breeding , or in Summer , and then ia small quantities only . Now ; for my method . Make your swarms early , and strengthen them up and equalize them with brood from your strongest stocks . In the breeding season , and while tbey are gathering honey , feed in small quantities when there Is a temporary cessation of pasturage , to keep * up the fertility of the queen ; for recollect that the queen stops breeding if there should be two days together that the bees gather nothing , especially in a young swarm that Is building comb . Should you make swarms late , do so by taking a single frame from a hive containing brood and honey , and make up a full swatm at once .. This I frequently do in late seasons to nse np my spare queens . By this method yon will have no weak stocks In the Fall . Every stock will be a No . 1 , if properly managed . In summer feeding , tt is just as easy fe...

THE POULTRY YARD [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 22 August 1868

THE POULTRY YARD Eggs by the Pound . A few days since , while making our purchases of provisions in market , we were forcibly struck with the difference in size between the eggs in the baskets of several farmers , although the price asked was the same for each . So great was the disparity that we purch . sheu a dozen - each from three different baskets , and for the purpose of ascertaining their weights correctly , took tbem to a warehouse where tbey were careluly weighed on Falrbank s standard scales , with the following result : No . 1 , 1 lo . 101-4 oz . ; No- 2 , 1 lb . 7 1-2 oz . ; No . 3 , 1 lb . 3 14 oz . It will be seen that there Is a difference of nearly 1-2 a lb . between Nos . 1 and 8 , and yet the price asked for them by those who had them for sale , was the same . It may be said that this is an extreme case ; we admit that it may properly be so considered , but if we take the weight of Nos . 1 and 2 , we find a difference of a little more than 3 oz . or 13 per cent . —...

Very slight Instruction and ingenuity are required to work it . The needle Is short and straight , consequently not liable to bond or break . It never misses a stitch , and makes a firm , even seam . I have used it on every kind of cloth , from delicate lace to heavy woolen , and find its work perfectly satisfactory in all cases .
