NOTES OF THE DAY [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 23 July 1898

NOTES OF THE DAY S PANIARDS at Santiago do not hesitate to say that they are glad Uncle Sam has taken hold of things down there , and even the surrendered troops are fraternizing with our men in the friendliest manner , happy that peace is once more their portion , and that they can get enough to satisfy the longings of long unsatiated appetites . The power of this government to compel peace and bring order out of chaos is already manifest at the city which came into our possession on Sunday last , and whose deplorable condition can scarcely be realized . The pitiful scenes attending the return , to Santiago of 20 , 000 miserable wretches who had fled to escape the inevitable bombardment had Toral refused finally to surrender , pass description . But the military power of the United States and the Red Cross society , under the direction of that noble-hearted woman , Clara Barton , have united to relieve the destitution and sickness , and latest reports indicate that they are succeed...

The Farmers' Forum [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 23 July 1898

The Farmers Forum The Farmers Forum Invites communications on all subjects from whatever point of view , the editor ot TUB VOICE assuming no responsibility whatever for tbo Ideas expressed . No communication should exceed 800 words in length . The Farmer s Outing . To the Editor : —We have been having a drouth now for about four weeks , and if continued much longer will tell on the late planted corn . Where corn was planted early upon well-drained land it is looking splendidly , but there is a large acreage of poor corn in central Illinois , and unless we have rains very soon it will not make half a crop . We had ideal weather for our haying and oat harvest , cool and dry . We are a little disappointed in the oats , as we find so many places where the chinch bugs had been at work . But they are cut and put up in good shape , as we took extra pains in shocking this year , putting ten bundles in a shock and then capping with two more , well pressed down . They may have to stand some t...

IMPROVEMENTS IN WIND MILLS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 23 July 1898

IMPROVEMENTS IN WIND MILLS . The Appleton M a n u acturing Co . of Batavia , 111 ., who have been regular advertisers in these columns , call our attention to an 1 m p r o v ement they have recently made in their Goodhue Steel AVind Mills . The top and pitman connection , where the pumping rod passes up through the pumping mechanism , has been provided with a crosshead operating in solid ways , similar to a steam engine . This insures directness of stroke , reduces the friction and increases the life of the wearing parts . It is a great improvement over the old method and the one in common use , where i the pump rod simply passes , through a single bearing at the top of the pumping mechanism , which soon becomes worn and loose , creating loss of motion and direct action . This improvement is peculiar only to the Goodhue Steel Mills , and adds further to their great utility as quickly acting , large capacity , easy operating , long-lived wind mills . The Appleton people will bo pleas...

Woman and Home [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 23 July 1898

Woman and Home ; Trust the Children Trust the children . Never doubt them , Build a wall of love about them ; After sowing seeds of duty , Trust them for the flowers of beauty . Trust the children . Dont suspect them , Let your confidence direct them , At the hearth or in the wildwood Meet them on the plane of childhood . Trust the little ones . Remember May is not like chill December . Let no words of rage or madness Check their happy notes of gladness . Trust the littleones . You guide them , And , above all , ne er deride them , Should they trip , or should they blunder , Lest you snap love s cord asunder . Trust the children . Let them treasure Mother s faith in boundless measure , Father s love in them confiding ; Then no secrets theyll be hiding . Trust the children just as He did Who for such once sweetly pleaded , Trust and guide , but never doubt them , Build a wait of love about them . —New York Ledger . A Prince in Disguise By Helen H . SMITH , 69 Summer St ., Biddeford , Me .: For several years I suffered with various diseases peculiar to my sex . Was troubled with , a burning sensation across the small of my back , that allgone feeling , was despondent , fretful and discouraged ; the least exertion tired me . I tried several doctors but received little benefit . At last I decided to give youe Lydia B . Pinkham s Vegetable Compound a trial . The effect of the first bottle was magical . Chess [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 23 July 1898

Chess PROBLEM NO . -. By I . Hostan , Prague . Contributed by Dr . S . Gold . Black , 8 pieces . rn 8 4 fb ° TpR 2 Pl ; lp 2 klP 1-5 pi r ; i P r p 1 ; 1 P Q 6 ; 8 . White to play and mate in three moves . As for the defensive power of the P , it is greatest at home , supported by R after castling , and sometimes by a B at Kl , or a S at R 3 or Ql , The BP is often useful in supporting the KP in the centre by PKB 3 . Thus in the Pouziani game , after 1 PK 4 , P-K 4 ; 2 S-KB 3 , S-QB 3 ; 3 P-B 3 , P-Q 4 ; 4 Q-R 4 or B-S 5 , P-KB 3 ! a strong move , introduced by Steinitz , gives Black the advantage . Mr . S . lays it down as a rule that When the adverse KB cannot be well played to QB 4 , then the KP is best defended by P at KB 3 . For a player of Mr . Steinitz careful style this is probably a good enough rule , but as a suggestion , it is well for anyone to remember . up . ,, „ „ THE INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT . 1 Vienna , July 19 . —Today s results in the thirty-fourth round of the in...

VICT 0 RY 0 NSEA AND LAND [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 23 July 1898

VICT 0 RY 0 NSEA AND LAND INTENSE MOMENTS IN WARFARE HOW WOMEN BEAR THE BRUNT OF WAR . During the few months we have been at war with Spain there have been many critical moments in which men felt that they were living whole years ! The landing of the invading army upon the shores of the enemy s country is perhaps the most critical time for the success or defeat of our arms . The enemy can pour in a deadly fire upon our men as they wade ashore , while they may be in comparative safety behind breastworks , unless they are within the accurate range of our war vessels . In every engagement our men have shown the most heroic bravery and steady-strong nerves coupled with determination . When Farragut and Gushing taught the world , in the naval engagements of our late war , of what material our navy was made , we did not expect so soon to see their counterparts in Dewey and Hobson . For all the risks that are run by our men and the critical moments they experience , and the times when they...
