HOW ABOUT ELIJAH 1 [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 19 March 1870

HOW ABOUT ELIJAH 1 An Illinois Lady Lives Twenty Years without Seeing a Minister . From Onward . A Methodist minister was on his travels through the west of Illinois twenty years ago . Illinois was a wild place then . He traveled twenty miles one day without coming to a farm house . But there he was received with hosp itality . Chicken pot pie and corn dodgers eomposed his supper ; but to a hungry man these are as good as a truffled turkey . A fine old grandmother of tho house was most profuse in her hospitality . She pressed the pot pie on the holy man s plate till he could eat no more . And then , when the family was gathered around the great log-chimney and its blazing fire , the venerable dame opened her month , and thus spake : Ah , well-a-day I it s a grand comfort to have a minister of the Gospel in these parts . It s twenty years agone now since I have seen one on em . Ive been a readin e my Bible all that time , an waitin to see a minister to ax him a question about suthin ...

THE TOUGHEST YAKS YET . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 19 March 1870

THE TOUGHEST YAKS YET . Remarkably BrlUlB-t Expedient for Getting oat ot Prison . From the Lawrence , KB ., Journal . Every ona at all familiar with the history of Kansas at an early day wil remember Dr John Boy , whose conflicts with the pro-slavery party , and whose exploits in connection with the underground railroad , while the iniquitous fugitive slave law was in force , made him extensively notorious . It will be remembered that , having re . moved to Battle Creek , Michigan , he was arrested on the charge of procuring an abortion , and thereby causing the death of the woman who sought his services . On this charge he was found guilty , and sentenced to a long term of confinement in the state p rison . As he was found dead in his bed one morning , under circumstances which strongly pointed to poison as the cause of his death , it was generally supposed that he resorted to suicide to ward off the disgrace which wonld result from his imprisonment . At all events he was buried , ...

Laconic Letters . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 19 March 1870

Laconic Letters . Laconic epistles are naturally suggested by quaint and pithy ones . The name Dorset reminds me of an amusing correspondence between two noble lords—the date of which lam unable to specify—somewhat in the followingterms : My dear Dorset . —I have just been married , and am the happiest dog alive . ( Signed ) BERKELEY . Answer—My Dear Berkeley . —Every dog has his day ! ( Signed ) DORSET . . Perhaps I ought to state that my authority for this correspondence ip a bachelor of more than seventy Summers ! From the same source I have received several other good examples of laconic letters , some of which I shall here introduce : 4 A Husband to his Wife on sailing suddenly for North America . My dear Wife—I am going to North America . Your affectionate husband . To which she thus replied— My dear Husband—I wish yon a happy voyage . Your affectionate wife . A young man when at college addressed his uncle , on whose liberality he entirely depended , as follows : My dear Uncl...

Some years since professional engagements called me from the Atlantic States to California , my duties pertaining to a case ot considerable importance . In the course of my business peregrinations I passed a week or two at Sacramento , then a town rapidly growing into note , but not so largely or densely populated as it is now . Shortly after my arrival there I met at my Hotel an old college classmate whom I had not seen for several years , and whom I should scarcely have recognized , so greatly was he changed in personal appearance . He had seen my name on the hotel register , and remembering it , waited upon me and introduced himself . I was heartily glad to see him in the faraway country , and we sat down to a pleasant chat together over the events of onr lives , past and present .
