A Progressive Easterner . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
A Progressive Easterner . In a recent interview with Secretary Frank S . Springer of the American Berkshire Association , we are informed that Eastern and Southern Berkshire breeders are registering great numbers of Berkshires . Mr . Springer is very optimistic regarding the outlook for Berkshires , and we are pleased to know that our Eastern friends appreciate the good qualities of the Berkshire breed of swine . One of the most enthusiastic Berkshire breeders in the East is Vallie Hawkins , M . D ., Fawn Grove , Pa . Dr . Hawkins is a natural lover of live stock and takes great pleasure in his Berkshire herd . Such men are needed in the ranks of Berkshire breeders , as they take into their Berkshire affairs the same intelligent business qualifications that have made them successful in their chosen line of professional work . Dr . Hawkins farm is known as Meadowview Farm , and at the head of his herd are the great boars , Meadowview Rival , a son of Lord Premier s Rival ; and Meadow...

Gentlemen : —In answer to your inquiry regarding what we are doing in the Berkshire industry , also the outlook for the near future . Have bred ten sows for Spring farrow to my boar , Artful Premier of Hill & Dale 120897 . These sows are out of Premier Goldie 6 th 102229 , who has proven a good investment . Of late , have adopted the optimistic point of view , regarding future business and Berkshire outlook , but find it rather difficult to advertise and make sales in competition with breeders of greater calibre . Respectfully yours , J . C , Chamberlain .

No Limit to the Berkshire Busi ness Except the Limit in . the Supply . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
No Limit to the Berkshire Busi ness Except the Limit in . the Supply . As the year 1910 closes , and the year 1911 is ushered in , we are glad to say to the public we believe there never has been a brighter outlook foi Berkshire breeders . Never have breeders experienced as good a trade as during the year 1910 , and it is a general condition now that there is very little surplus stock of selli age to be found on the farms of our breeders . The demand for GOOD Berkshires seems to be unlimited , but the supply is far below the demand , at present . The market conditions look good for several months , and this good price for fat hogs insures good trade for the breeder . The Berkshire is becoming more and more popular with the farmer and feeder . The Championship honors won at the International and other barrow shows of recent years , we think have done much to show the world that Berkshires have no superior in the feed lot . The trade is not as much between breeders only , as it was a ...
Business Good in Virginia [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Business Good in Virginia Charlottesville , Va . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Am glad to say that business has been good with us this Fall , and I think the prospect for good Berkshires was never better . Our herd is doing well . We have some 20 sows bred for March litter , besides a number of gilts to breed for later litters . We never before had as fine a lot of Fail pigs . Have been getting a lot of Masterpiece s Images first pigs . They have been , without exception , large litters of the largest , longest pigs we ever had , and a large proportion sows—for instance , one litter all sows , in another 8 out of 9 pigs . Enclose our 1910 catalog . Am using Masterpiece Premier 4 th and Masterpiece s Image mostly and Baron Premier T . on some sows . With the galaxy of sows we have , we ought to get good results . As regards the Futurity will say I have nominated 22 sows and 3 boars and expect to nominate every gilt I sell . Actions speak louder than words the...
Berkshires Cure for Boll Weevil [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Berkshires Cure for Boll Weevil McCarley , Miss . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen—I note in your December issue you ask to hear from the Berkshire breeders of America . I am a small farmer and Berkshire breeder on the sun-kissed hills of Mississippi . This is a cotton country , that being our chief crop , or , as we term it , our money crop . We raise some corn and other feed crops , but not enough to feed our stock . Some of the best farmers have been buying northern corn to feed their stock . This country is undergoing a great change . We have with us now a very undesirable little bug that goes by the name of the Mexican Boll Weevil . He has come to feed upon our cotton . We have been informed that the only way to get rid of him is to refuse to board him . His chief diet is cotton , so you see what we are up against . Now as I am writing this for a hog paper , if I dont say something about hogs it will find its way into the waste basket . Up to this time there ...
If tfhe South Wants It , She Gets It . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
If tfhe South Wants It , She Gets It . ; .. • • Shreveport , La . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Dont suppose there is any use to brag on conditions down here , but we are certainly not pessimists now . With our mail flooded with inquiries , and our pens rapJSIy depleted with sales , and with the knowledge that you corn belt fellows have found out that we have at least one man down south that knows a Berkshire when he sees him—why we just naturally feel better , and why shouldnt we ? I , for one , feel that Col . S . Q . Hollingsworth of Louisana has opened up the way for better Berkshires and better sales all through the South , and the Berkshire Association is to be congratulated for having chosen him judge at the International . It was the reward of merit and ability , and such things are quickly appreciated in this section of the country where Berkshires are already selling so fast that my sows feel their importance to the limit , and have the aristocrati...
Outlook Good in New York . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Outlook Good in New York . Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Dear Sirs : —The outlook for Berkshires is satisfactory here in the East . In a recent letter we submitted figures from our Department of Agriculture showing that in New York State there were more registered Berkshires than pure bred swine of all other breeds combined . This willl bear repeating because it is good news to Berkshire men . We believe this record will be maintained . We have known of several breeders during the past ten or fifteen years who have disposed of pure bred herds of Chester Whites , Large Yorkshires , Victorias and other breeds in order to breed Berkshires exclusively . We have never known a breeder to abandon the Berkshires for any other breed . Of course , a feeder here and there will occasionally make a change , but those who have given the Berkshire a fair trial usually stick to him . During November and December several breeders have visited our herd . They all report splendid sales and a d...
California Belongs to the Berk shire . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
California Belongs to the Berk shire . Shipment of Berkshires to Honolulu made by G . A . Murphy . Perkins . Cal Perkins , Cal . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —We are just closing one of the most prosperous years in Berkskires we have ever experienced in the West . In all the cities of the coast the price has been above 8 cents throughout the year , and at times as high as 10 % cents for butcher hogs . When a farmer gets prices like these , he feels like paying good prices for pure-bred breeding stock . The only difficulty is to find a supply of this stock to draw from . There are no large breeders of pure-bred hogs of any kind on the coast , but there are a number of small breeders of Berkshires and Poland Chinas , and a few of the other breeds . The popular farmers hog in California now is the Berkshire , and when the breeder of butcher stock cannot get one of that breed , he gets next choice—a Poland China . The Berkshire breeders most serious question now...

Thorntown , Ind . To The Public : — I wish to express my appreciation of the efforts of the Editor and Manager of The Berkshire World for what they are doing for the Berkshire breed and breeders . The paper is a live one and is full of fresh Berkshire news each month . Its Futurity plan is certainly a commendable feature and should have the support of all Berkshire breeders , whether breeding on a large or a small scale . It will do much for the breed if the breeders will support it . Respectfully , E . J . Barker .
