McElvaiu of Caruthersville is taking steps to secure the par don of Oscar Bridges, sent to the penitentiary from Caruthers ville for a life term a few months ago under the habitual criminal act. There is little doubt but what the sentence was excessive, and, we are told, he was at first offer ed a term of five years if he would enter a plea of guilty. In this case, the mere fact of secur ing his conviction should not make his crime more henious, and if he deserved five years after having acknowledged his guilt, which he refused to do, then might not his refusal to plead guilty indicate that he did not believe he was guilty as charged? We are not arguing the case, and we are not censuring the trial court. We are trying to get at the facts. We are dealing with a human being, who is en titled to mercy. We do not know" the e...
