There remains to bo considered ono of the roost disastrous of tbe phenomena attending the destruction of tbo tlmbor, though happily not the moit frequent, else tbo country would become uninhabitable. The extraordinary rainfalls, to which tbo people save the name of cloudburst, bejan to be noticed 100 years ago. The common opinion was that tho cloud was rent by the sharp angle of the mountain, letting out millions of tons of water. Ono of tboso phenomenal rainfalls occurred about 18J3, in Lyme, N. IL The country generally had been denuded of timber. A lofty hill, inaccessible to the loggers' team, had bjen spared, leaving perhaps o mile square covered so thickly with timber that tbe sunlight scarcely penetrated the thick foliage.
