I THURSDAY JULY 7 1910 SHORT STORIES OF MISSOURI The first congressman from Missouri was John Scott of St Genevieve He vtas the delegate in congress from Mis souri territory for four years and then served as congerssman for eight years After retiring from politics he returned to St Genevieve where ho engaged in the practice of law and for forty years was a most successful lawyer As was the custom then with mem bers of he bar in -Missouri he traveled from court to court on horseback his saddle covered with a large sheep skin and his saddle bags filled with law books He was of medium size quick and active ot step and always carried a green bag with him wherever ho went He was noted for the eccentri city of wearing winter and summer a cloth cap that almost covered his eyes and his pantaloons were always at least four sizes too large for him All his life he carried under his vest on his left side a beautifully carved dirk and on the other side a pistol Daniel Dunklin was elected gover n...
